LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – University of South Alabama women's soccer's Lauren Allison delivered her third game-winner of the year on Friday, poking home a rebound midway through the second half, as the Jaguars claimed their first Sun Belt Conference road victory 1-0 against UALR.
Â
The freshman forward's conversion was her team-leading 10th of the year, which, including seven assists, makes for 27 points on the year, one short of a break into USA's single-season top 10.
Â
"I'm very proud of the girls for handling some adversity tonight and pushing for a victory," said USA head coach Graham Winkworth. "Little Rock are a direct, long-ball type of team, and we were playing on turf. We made some adjustments at halftime and, after that, there was only going to be one winner.
Â
"We've been struggling a bit on the road this season, so it's great to turn that corner and grab a result away from home," he continued. "This takes a lot of pressure off us heading into Sunday, as well as the rest of the year."
Â
South Alabama (8-3-2) finishes off its final weekend road trek on Sunday when it faces Arkansas State in Jonesboro. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kick. Â
The Trojans (3-8-0) surged from the outset Friday night at UALR Recreation and Sports Complex, reeling off six shots and three corner kicks before USA could produce its first opportunity; however, half were off-target and Jaguar keeper Melissa Drish denied a pair.
Â
USA's Morgan Motes sent her effort wide after the Jaguar defense turned away Amanda Wilkinson's header, and then Allison took control.
Â
The freshman made UALR keeper Sara Cavanagh work twice shortly before the first half and twice again after the break before depositing a spilled UALR clearance of Clarissa Hernandez's corner in the 68th minute.
Â
"We really began to match their intensity after halftime," Winkworth concluded. "This is a fabulous group with a phenomenal work rate. The girls showed great character tonight in this result."
Â
USA outshot UALR, 13-11, in the match and 10-4 in the second half alone. USA also led in corner kicks, 5-4. Drish made five saves on the night and claimed her fourth shutout of the season. The Jaguars now have six total this year.
Â
Moving to 2-3-1 on the road this year, USA breaks a three-game road losing skid.
Â
Allison finished the night with six shots, four on frame. Monique Autmon contributed three shots, placing one on target.
