RUBIT SHINES IN PRESEASON INTRASQUAD SCRIMMAGE

MOBILE, Ala. – Senior Augustine Rubit (Houston, Texas) had game-high totals of 17 points and 12 rebounds in the University of South Alabama men's basketball team's intrasquad scrimmage Monday afternoon at the Mitchell Center.

The Red and Blue teams played to a 49-49 tie after four eight-minute quarters. Ten of the team's 13 players saw action for both sides.

"First off I'd really like to thank the fans that came out to watch," USA head coach Matthew Graves said. "I was surprised at the number here and I look forward to seeing them again on Nov. 5 (exhibition vs. Mobile). I wanted to get these guys out here with three officials and see them go up and down (the floor) and execute. You could see some of the flaws that we had today but we have two weeks before we have a closed scrimmage so we certainly have some things to work, but overall I'm pretty pleased with our effort."

The two teams combined for 46.7 percent shooting in the first half, including 52.4 percent by the Blue team, but the squads converted just 30.0 percent after the break.

"I thought we did a good job of taking care of the basketball for the most part, Graves said. "The thing that concerned me as we got later on in the scrimmage was I thought our shot selection started to wane. We need to continue to move the ball and get the best shot for our team, not necessarily the best shot for that individual."

Four other Jaguars hit double-digit points combined playing with both teams. Sophomore Barrington Stevens III (Allen, Texas) totaled 12 while shooting 2-for-4 from 3-point land. Freshman Ken Williams (Manvel, Texas) tallied 11 points, and junior Mychal Ammons (Vicksburg, Miss.) and freshman T.J. Johnson (Tamarac, Fla.) added 10 apiece.

Junior Dionte Ferguson (Prattville, Ala.) matched Rubit's total with 12 boards, including six on the offensive end.

"Our bigs did a really good job of going to the offensive glass. I thought Dionte and Austin both did a really good job getting us extra possessions. It's the good and the bad when you're watching your own team: on one end, guys are going to the glass but then somebody isn't blocking out so it's a two-way street."

The Jaguars are in their third week of preseason practice. The season opener is Nov. 8 against Detroit in the Mitchell Center.
