USA FOOTBALL ASSISTANT COACH PERRY ACCEPTS POSITION AT UNT

Tommy Perry resigned after serving four seasons as USA's running backs coach and special teams coordinator.

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama head football coach Joey Jones announced Wednesday that assistant coach Tommy Perry has resigned his position on the Jaguar coaching staff.

Perry, who worked with Jag running backs and served as special teams coordinator in each of the program’s first four seasons of competition, has joined the staff at former Sun Belt Conference foe North Texas.  Perry is a native of the Lone Star State who earned his degree from Texas A&M in 2003.

“I'm glad that a good friend and coach has the chance to move on to a position that is an hour from his home where he grew up,” said Jones.  “Tommy has been an integral part of building our program, we appreciate all that he has done for us at South Alabama.”

Two of Perry’s placekickers — Jordan Means in 2011 and Michel Chapuseaux last fall — earned postseason recognition after leading the team in scoring, while T.J. Glover ranked among the top five in the Sun Belt in both punt (second) and kickoff (fourth) returns under his direction.  In 2011, Scott Garber finished among the top 20 individuals at the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision after averaging 41.71 yards per punt, Jeremé Jones ranked within the top 30 with an average of 8.61 yards per punt return and as a team the Jags finished eighth with nearly 24 yards per kick return.

In the offensive backfield, both Demetre Baker and Kendall Houston were among the top 10 FCS Independent running backs in rushing and scoring in 2011, with the former also standing among the league leaders in yards per game on the ground for most of the 2012 campaign until suffering a season-ending injury.
