Jags Prevail in Second-Consecutive Overtime Match
Box Score
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Junior defender Jess Oram slammed home a corner kick in the waning moments of a scoreless battle to give the University of South Alabama women’s soccer team a win in double overtime versus Austin Peay Friday night at Morgan Brothers Field.
Oram’s golden goal and first career collegiate goal couldn’t have arrived in a timelier fashion, as the Jaguar chested in a corner taken by freshman winger Alyssa Mayer in the second overtime period of what had been a relatively even contest up until then.
“We were outplayed in the first half,” said USA head coach Mike Varga. “But we were strong defensively, and that helped us to a turnaround in the second. We were more aggressive offensively and it made for a more even game. We created chances and scored when we needed to.”
Austin Peay (3-5-0, 0-0-0 OVC) carried with it into halftime a 9-1 advantage in shots and a 6-0 advantage in corners over the Jaguars (5-3-1, 0-0-0 SBC), but USA – as it has done throughout the season, scoring nine of its 10 total goals after the interval – came back spirited from the locker room.
South Alabama managed nine shots in the second period to the Lady Governors’ eight, forcing APSU goalkeeper Haylee Shoaff into all six of her recorded saves. USA netminder Melissa Drish got her first start of the season and tallied 10 saves in what was South Alabama’s fourth shutout in seven matches.
The Jaguars will now rest on Saturday and trip east to Murray, Ky., on Sunday to face the Racers, who won their first match of the season on Friday, blanking Alabama A&M 5-0 to move to 1-5 on the year.
“This is a mentally tough team,” added Varga. “We’re treating this weekend like a Sun Belt Conference road trip and we want to win two. We will look to get off to a better start on Sunday versus Murray State.”
Additional Notes:
-
Mayer’s assist was the first of her career.
-
Drish, appearing for the second time this season, recorded a USA season-high total of saves, tying her fourth-highest career total in a match since 2011 versus UALR.
