WINDSOR, Ont.
– The University of South Alabama men’s basketball team staged a furious fourth-quarter rally to send the game into overtime, but Windsor outscored the Jaguars 8-6 in the extra frame to earn an 82-80 win Monday night at the St. Denis Centre.

The Jags will continue their exhibition tour against Western (Ont.) University Tuesday night at 6 p.m. CDT.

“I thought we came out and played good early in the first four or five minutes but we let them get too far ahead,” said USA head coach Ronnie Arrow. “We had a great comeback but we just couldn’t finish it out. Hopefully we learned from it, which is what this is all about. Naturally we want to win, but I think this did us some good. We saw some things that we need to work on. Tomorrow night we’ll start a completely different bunch—we’ll probably play the two new inside guys a lot more than the ones back from last year and give them a chance to get some minutes.”

Junior Augustine Rubit (Houston, Texas) led all players with 27 points and 11 rebounds, and Mychal Ammons (Vicksburg, Miss.) also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Seniors Javier Carter (Dallas, Texas) and Freddie Goldstein (Milwaukee, Wis.) reached double-figures with 17 points and 11 points, respectively.

For the Lancers, Michael Petrella tallied 24 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the floor. Josh Collins had 14 points and a game-high five assists and Evan Matthews led the UW rebounding efforts with eight and added 13 points.

“We shot 38 percent (from the floor) in the first half—that was the start of it—and then we didn’t guard on top of it and that’s how we got down so much,” Arrow said.

Windsor entered the fourth quarter with a 60-46 lead after outscoring South Alabama 26-17 in the third period. The Jags, thanks to their 51.5 second-half shooting percentage, doubled up the Lancers 28-14 in the final frame to send the game into overtime.

“Losing is never good but I think that some of our guys saw what we did and didn’t do and got down. We can’t let teams get us down like that.”
