ALL-AMER"AGAIN" : USA'S SCHWARTZ FINISHES HEPTATHLON 10th FOR SECOND NCAA HONOR

Senior Lindsay Schwartz
DES MOINES, Iowa – University of South Alabama senior Lindsay Schwartz repeated as a second-team National Collegiate Athletic Association All-American in the women’s heptathlon after she finished tied for 10th place with Wisconsin’s Deanna Latham Friday at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium.

Schwartz recorded a school-record 5,606 points, clearing the Olympic trials “B” standard score by six marks. A provisional qualifier for the trials, Schwartz will be granted the opportunity to participate at the event if her score remains amongst the top-18 leading up to entry announcements.

“This was an outstanding performance from Lindsay in a very competitive field,” said head coach Paul Brueske. “But she is a tremendous competitor. She and (multi-events head) coach (Randy) Flach have done a solid job this season.”

Heading into the second day of competition with a 15th-place standing, Schwartz wasted no time in getting down to brass tacks, recording a season-best in the opening event, the long jump (5.90m/19-04.25; 819 points) and then reeling off two career-bests in the javelin throw (36.99m/121-04; 610 pts.) and 800 meters (2:15.66; 883 pts.) to cap the seven-trial event with a score 332 tallies better than the NCAA sum she accumulated in her 2011 13th-place performance and 138 better than the previous school record she set in March at the Texas Relays.

The Watertown, Wisc., native ends her collegiate track and field career as a five-time Sun Belt Conference champion, with three titles in the heptathlon and two in the indoor pentathlon, both in which she is the current USA and conference record holder.

Lady Jag Latifah Johnson was named an honorable mention All-American for her performance in the women’s hammer throw on Thursday, where, as the first female USA thrower to advance to the national finals in program history, she finished 17th overall.
