JAG BASEBALL FALLS TO ALABAMA, 9-5

MOBILE, Ala.  – Alabama scored three runs in the seventh inning and added two in the eighth en route to a 9-5 win over University of South Alabama baseball Tuesday at Stanky Field.

After South Alabama (11-18) took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run home run by Nick Zaharion, the Crimson Tide answered with three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead on a two-run single by Ben Moore and pinch-hit RBI single by Austen Smith.

Alabama (10-19) added the game’s final two runs on RBI singles by Taylor Dugas and Brett Booth in the eighth inning.

Spencer Turnbull (1-2) allowed five runs on five hits with six strikeouts and a walk in six innings to earn his first career win at Alabama. USA right-hander Jaime Dennis (1-3) suffered the loss in 1/3 of an inning, allowing one run on one hit.

Jordan Patterson went 2-for-4 with a home run, one RBI and two runs scored, and Nick Zaharion homered, drove in three runs and scored one run to lead the Jaguars at the plate. Whitt Dorsey added a hit, one RBI and a run scored.

Dugas went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored, and Ben Moore finished 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored to lead Alabama at the plate.

Dugas broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third with a one-out triple down the right-field line that scored James Tullidge from first base. Alabama doubled its lead to 2-0 one batter later on an RBI groundout to shortstop by Brett Booth.

Turnbull retired the first 11 batters he faced in the game before Patterson delivered a two-out solo homer to right field in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Crimson Tide lead to 2-1.
 
Jared Reaves led off the top of the sixth with a single, and Moore followed with a double to right field. Reaves scored one batter later on an RBI groundout to second by Jon Kelton, and Moore scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Brandt Hendricks to increase the Alabama lead to 4-1.

USA cut the Alabama lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Dorsey singled to right field to score Nolan Earley from second after he reached on a walk earlier in the frame. Zaharion followed with a three-run home run over the left-field fence to give the Jags a 5-4 lead.

South Alabama will return to action this weekend when it travels to Boca Raton, Fla., for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series with Florida Atlantic. Game one of the series is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. (CT) first pitch.
