TROY, Ala. – Demetre Baker, Latifah Johnson and Briana Aiken each recorded victories in multiple events, while freshman Shannen Weyer set her second USA-record steeplechase time in as many meets on Saturday at Troy’s Coach “O” Invitational – the final meet of the regular season for the Jaguars before the conference championships.
Baker threw a personal-best 54.20m to win the discus and his shot put victory mark of 16.87m on Saturday was his second consecutive at the Troy meet, as the Orange Park, Fla., native shattered the school’s previous shot put record held by Tony Petro since 1968 when he threw 17.17m (56-04) for the collegiate title last season. Baker surpassed his own record at the Jaguar Invitational on March 31 when he threw 17.72m (58-01.75) for the event title.
Latifah Johnson won her fourth collegiate hammer throw title in seven competitions this season on Saturday when she threw for 58.51m to lead Bobbie Williamson (3
rd, 54.11m) and Savannah Nobles (7
th coll.; 48.90m). Williamson also took fourth in the discus throw on 43.72m mark. Johnson also won the women's shot put with a throw of 14.16m with Williamson following at second (13.76m).
Briana Aiken won both the women’s pole vault and long jump for two of five total University of South Alabama track and field victories on Saturday at Troy’s Coach “O” Invitational. Aiken cleared 3.77m to take the pole vault crown – a height that led the Sun Belt as of press time Saturday night – and leapt a personal-best 5.85m to finish atop the long jump field.
Freshman Shannen Weyer’s winning 3,000-meter steeplechase time of 11:01.24 clocked in over 17 seconds faster than the second-best competitor in the event and 13 second faster than the previous USA-record she set last week at the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn.
Joey Torres finished runner-up in the men’s division of the event on a measure of 57.93m. Adam Patterson threw for a personal-best 55.80m to take third, while Steven Nobles finished a spot behind with a 55.68m effort. Patterson also finished second behind Baker int he shot on a 16.23m heave.
Four Jaguars finished among the top-eight in the men’s pole vault, with freshman Taylor Krause leading with a second-place effort on a height of 4.50m. William Henley took fourth, clearing the same height; only with more misses, to finish ahead of Garrett Schumacher (6
th, 4.35m) and Ashton Krause (3.90m). Ashton also tied for third in the high jump (1.89m), while Schumacher tied for sixth (1.84m).
Erika Saxton finished fourth collegiately and fifth overall in the women’s 100 meters (12.19), followed by Erikka Williams at ninth collegiately and 10
th overall (12.36). Saxton also took ninth in the 200 meters in 25.37 seconds, while Williams leapt 5.64m to finish third in the long jump.
Tyler Agee and Ashton Krause recorded top-10 finishes in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, with Agee finishing eighth collegiately (14.94) and Krause following in ninth (15.23). Freshman Tevin Barnett placed fourth collegiately, seventh overall, in the 400-meter hurdles (54.58), ahead of Agee (9
th coll.; 56.79).
Melissa McCluskey nabbed fourth in the women’s 400 meters (57.28) and 10
th in the 200 (25.63). Kendra Lowe finished seventh in the 800-meter run (2:21.74) and freshman Kristin Parry completed the women’s 1,500 meters in 5:03.18 for eighth.
Justin Housley, Alex Shields and Ronny Wilson went 2-4-5 in the men’s 1,500 meters in times of 3:54.70, 3:56.99 and 3:57.01, respectively. Ian Bordelon finished third in the men’s 3,000-meter steeple, crossing the line third (9:50.60) - a spot ahead of fellow Jag Derek Westbrook (9:53.36). Brandon Troub took third collegiately and fourth overall in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:17.05.
Leah Hixon finished fifth collegiately, sixth overall, in the women’s high jump (1.59m), ahead of Jasmine Ferguson (8
th coll.; 1.54m), who also took seventh in the long jump (5.27m).
Angela McCord won her first javelin throw event of the season with a measure of 43.18m. Lacy Barger finished runner-up with a throw of 39.65m. Stephen Calogrides took third in the men’s division (63.05m), followed by Glen Odom at fifth (60.00m).
