MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama softball team enters Tuesday’s game against Nicholls looking to extend its current win streak to six games. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Jaguar Field.
South Alabama (23-9, 11-2 SBC) took its fourth consecutive Sun Belt Conference series this past weekend with three wins over Middle Tennessee in Mobile. The Jags, now No. 1 in the conference standings, edged the Blue Raiders 3-2 and 4-3 in games one and two Saturday before run-ruling MTSU 8-0 in five innings Sunday.
Junior Brittany Fowler and freshman Blair Johnson lead USA at the plate in almost all statistical categories. Johnson paces the club with a .362 batting average and 38 hits including a team-high nine doubles. Fowler, who is hitting .347 on the year, holds a squad-leading .589 slugging percentage and a .461 on-base percentage. She also leads the team with 27 RBI and 56 total bases.
In the circle, sophomore Hannah Campbell is 14-6 this season with five shutouts and a save. Campbell’s ERA is a club-low 2.40, and she has struck out 118 batters in 122.1 innings of work. Senior Katy Neal (5-3) holds a 2.57 ERA and has thrown 32 Ks in 49 innings.
The Jaguars evened the all-time series with the Colonels to 5-5 earlier this season after they topped Nicholls 8-2 in Thibodaux, La. on Feb. 21.
The Colonels have compiled an 8-21 overall record this year while posting a 4-4 mark in the Southland Conference. This past weekend Nicholls split a pair of games with Texas State losing 0-3 on Saturday before picking up a 1-0 victory Sunday.
Nicholls is batting .273 on the year with senior Ashley Ray and junior Ashley Bertot leading the way. Ray has recorded a .410 batting average with 34 hits, including eight doubles and six home runs, and 23 RBI. Bertot is hitting .348 and has scored 20 times off of 31 hits.
The Colonel pitching staff has a 4.08 ERA so far this year. Sophomore Katie Moulder (4-10) has seen the most action in the circle recording an ERA of 3.01 in 97.2 innings of work. Moulder has given up 117 hits and 59 runs this season.
