JAGUAR SOFTBALL SHUTS OUT SOUTHERN MISS 6-0

Freshman Alyssa Linn

USA vs. USM 2 box score

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama softball team secured its second shutout of Southern Miss in as many days Sunday afternoon with a 6-0 win over the Golden Eagles at Jaguar Field.

South Alabama improves to 27-12 on the year with the win. The Golden Eagles are now 12-24 overall.

In the circle, sophomore southpaw Hannah Campbell (16-8) allowed only one hit while striking out 13 batters in five innings of work. USA junior Jessica Dobson and freshman Kaleigh Floore tossed an inning of hitless relief, respectively. USM’s Beth Dietrich took the loss falling to 6-10 on the year.

“We had great pitching today and yesterday,” said USA head coach Becky Clark. “Hannah and Farish obviously did their jobs both days. I give a lot of credit to Alex (Breeden) behind the plate. She calls a great game for them. We also brought in some relievers and they came in and threw scoreless innings as well. Neither Jessica nor Kaleigh gave up a hit. We always say the game starts in the circle so when your pitcher is having a good day, you’re going to have a good day.”

The Jags dominated the contest offensively outhitting the Golden Eagles 9-1 on the day. Junior Britany Campbell went 2-for-2 with one run while senior Christin Crocker and freshman Alyssa Linn had two hits in three at-bats. Juniors Brittany Fowler and Meghan Collins and sophomore Haley Richards each put up a hit.

“The kids did a good job of putting pressure on Southern Miss,” Clark said. “We always talk about making the defense stop you and they did a good job of that today. They put pressure on them and we were able to score runs because of it.”

In the bottom of the second, Crocker hit a two-out single to center. She then stole second and some aggressive base running paired with an error by the Southern Miss center fielder brought Crocker home giving the Jags the 1-0 lead.

With two outs in the home half of the fourth inning, Linn hit a bases-loaded triple to plate Crocker, Richards and B. Campbell putting USA on top 4-0.

South Alabama carried the momentum into the fifth scoring two more runs after H. Campbell sat down all three USM batters. Collins picked up her eighth double of the year before freshman Alex Breeden reached on an error by Southern Miss second baseman Omeshia Moffett that pushed Collins to third. Crocker followed reaching on a fielder’s choice when the Golden Eagle second baseman threw out Breeden at second. USM shortstop Britney Dinelt attempted to turn the double play, but overthrew the first baseman allowing Crocker the reach second and Collins to score.

Dietrich then hit Richards and B. Campbell to load the bases. She then issued her second walk of the game to Linn sending Crocker home.

On April 17, South Alabama will travel to Hammond, La. for its third matchup of the year with Southeastern Louisiana at 6 p.m.
