JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Florida scored five runs in the final two innings en route to a 10-4 win over University of South Alabama baseball Friday at Harmon Stadium.
UNF (9-4) pounded out 15 hits in the game, with six Ospreys recording multiple hits.
USA (4-10) cut the UNF lead to one run in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out RBI double to left-center field by Jordan Patterson that scored Nick Zaharion, who also doubled with two outs.
But UNF added a single run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from Alex Bacon to take a 6-4 lead, and added four runs in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Andrew Karmeris, two-run double by Chris Carter and sacrifice fly off the bat of Bacon.
UNF right-hander Kyle Westwood (2-0) earned the win 6 2/3 innings pitched, allowing four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Jarron Cito (1-1) suffered the loss in 4 1/3 innings, and allowed five runs on 10 hits with a strikeout and three walks.
Patterson went 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs, four RBI and two runs scored to lead the Jags at the plate. Whitt Dorsey also went 3-for-4.
Karmeris finished 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored to lead UNF.
Cito recorded two quick outs in the bottom of the first before issuing two walks and a single to load the bases. Ryan Roberson then singled to third base to score Karmeris and give the Ospreys a 1-0 lead.
Patterson answered with the Jags’ first home run of the season, a solo shot over the right-field wall, to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the second.
The Ospreys took a 3-1 lead in the bottom-half of the second inning on a two-out, two-run double by Karmeris, and added two runs in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI groundout by Bacon and RBI single by Joe Iorio to take a 5-1 lead.
USA cut the UNF lead to 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning when Patterson delivered a two-out, two-run homer to left field that also scored Hook, who reached on a fielder’s choice earlier in the frame.
The series will continue with game two Saturday at noon (CT).
