BLUE RAIDERS DEFEAT JAG BASEBALL TO EVEN SERIES

Drew Cofield had a double and one RBI in the Jaguars' 12-3 loss to Middle Tennessee Saturday at Stanky Field.

MOBILE, Ala.  – Middle Tennessee left-hander Johnathan Frebis tossed a complete game and struck out seven to lead Middle Tennessee to a 12-3 win over University of South Alabama baseball Saturday at Stanky Field.

Frebis (3-2) allowed three runs on four hits, and issued three walks to earn his third win of the season. The left-hander allowed a double in the first inning and a single in the fourth, and then retired 14 consecutive batters before allowing two hits in the ninth.

Anthony Izzio (4-1) suffered the loss in four innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Middle Tennessee (16-12, 4-4 SBC) pounded out 20 hits, and scored in the final six innings of the game. Seven Blue Raiders recorded multiple hits, led by Justin Guidry who went 4-for-5 with a triple, one RBI and four runs scored. Johnny Thomas finished 4-for-6 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored.

Middle Tennessee threatened in the top of the first on a one-out single by Guidry and double by Thomas, and took a 1-0 lead one batter later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Trent Miller.

The Jags threatened in the bottom of the second when Nick Zaharion and Dustin Dalken drew consecutive walks, and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Hunt Griffith. Zaharion later scored on a wild pitch by Frebis to tie the game 1-1.

Middle Tennessee jumped ahead in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout by Jordan Rorex for a 2-1 lead. Ryan Stephens followed with an RBI single up the middle of the infield for a 3-1 Blue Raider lead.

MTSU took a 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth on a two-run double by Hank LaRue, and added four runs in the top of the sixth on RBI singles by Ryan Ford and Thomas, RBI double by Miller and RBI triple by Guidry for a 9-1 lead.

The Blue Raiders added a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Ford, and took an 11-1 lead in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Adkins. MTSU added their final run of the game on a Jaguar throwing error.

USA scored the game’s final runs on an RBI double by Drew Cofield and RBI groundout by Whitt Dorsey in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Colin Bray went 2-for-4 with a double and one run scored to lead the Jaguars at the plate. Cofield had a double and one RBI, and Dorsey added a hit and drove in one run.

The series will conclude with the rubber match at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field.
