MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama softball team will continue spring break action in Bowling Green, Ky. this weekend with a Sun Belt Conference series against Western Kentucky at the WKU Softball Complex. The Jags will play two games on Saturday, with the first beginning at 1 p.m., and one on Sunday at noon.
After sweeping Louisiana-Monroe last weekend, the Jaguars (15-7, 3-0 SBC) split their mid-week games edging UAB 1-0 Wednesday afternoon before dropping 5-3 decision to Samford Thursday in Birmingham, Ala.
As a team, USA holds a .302 batting average. Freshman left fielder Alyssa Linn leads a group of eight Jags hitting .250 or better on the season with a .379 batting average including 25 hits. Junior short stop Brittany Fowler is right behind Linn with a .354 average. Fowler has totaled 23 hits, which includes five doubles and four home runs, and holds a squad-leading 18 RBI.
Sophomore Hannah Campbell paces South Alabama in the circle with 71 strikeouts in 78.1 innings of work. Campbell, who is 8-5, has tossed 10 complete games including four shutouts and has an earned run average of 2.41. Senior Katy Neal (4-2) and junior Jessica Dobson (2-0) round out the Jaguar pitching staff with eight appearances apiece. Neal’s ERA is 2.16 while Dobson’s is a team-low 1.08.
The Hilltopers lead the all-time series with the Jaguars 8-6. Last season, South Alabama run-ruled WKU in all three games of the series at Jaguar Field.
Western Kentucky enters the weekend looking to improve its 18-8 overall record and its 3-0 mark in conference play. The Hilltoppers have only given up one loss at home this season. Wednesday, WKU fell to No. 14/15 Louisville 6-0 at the WKU Softball Complex.
Western Kentucky is batting .271 overall. Freshman right fielder Shawna Sadler holds the Hilltoppers’ highest batting average (.310) and has a team-leading 26 hits on the season. Sadler has notched a home run, two triples, three doubles and eight RBI.
Junior Kim Wagner (9-2) and sophomore Emily Rousseau (8-4) split time in the circle for WKU. Wagner has a 1.68 ERA with 82 Ks while Rousseau averages 2.23 earned runs per game and has tallied 67 strikeouts on the year.
