Senior Haley Hopkins picked up the only two USA hits of the game

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– The University of South Alabama softball team was able to capitalize on two UAB errors and extended their win streak to seven games downing the Blazers, 1-0, in front of a capacity crowd at the UAB Softball Field in Birmingham, Ala., Wednesday.

"This was great win for us today," said USA head coach Becky Clark. "Being on the road, they had the crowd and they are a tough team to beat at home. They've only lost three games at home all year, so I thought our kids did a great job of coming in and competing. Sometimes in these games it's one little thing that makes the difference. Today that throw to first base was a little high, the first baseman was off the bag and Christin (Crocker) got in to score for us."

South Alabama is now 15-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play. UAB fell to 11-10 on the season.

Sophomore southpaw Hannah Campbell picked (8-5) up her eighth win and fourth shutout of the year while her twin sister Lannah Campbell (5-4) took the loss. H. Campbell threw five strikeouts and did not give up a run in the shutout.

"Hannah did a great job today of battling and fighting," Clark said. "There were a lot of distractions for her today with all the hype, but I thought she and Katy Neal did a really good job of working together because that's a very good offense. They did a good job of shutting them down, making the pitches and getting the outs when we needed them to."

UAB outhit South Alabama 5-2, but the Blazers could not finish.

Senior Haley Hopkins led all Jaguar bats with the only two South Alabama hits of the game. Hopkins now has a batting average of .355 and 22 total hits on the season.

Hopkins got the first Jaguar hit of the game in the top of the fifth inning, but was picked off by the catcher for the first out of the inning. Senior Christin Crocker reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and then stole second before another Blazer error by the short stop would send her home and allow sophomore Haley Richards to reach first.

"Christin was huge for us today," Clark said. "When she got on first, I told her to find a way to get in to second. I told her to pick the pitch, but get to second. It was a great slide at second. She went around the tag. She's the one that you want in that situation because she's going to find a way to get there."

USA returns to action Thursday when they square off with Samford in Birmingham at 4 p.m. at Bulldog Field.
