MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team won all five singles matches in straight sets and extended its winning streak to four with a 7-0 blanking of Alabama State Tuesday at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
The Jaguars improve to 8-4 on the year while the Hornets drop to 0-10.
“I'm very pleased with the professional and disciplined manner in which we took care of business today,” said Jaguar head coach
Jaco Keyser. “We can always control our mindset, effort and body language regardless of where, who and when we play, and today we did a good job of that.”
USA dropped just one game total in singles and won doubles by a combined score of 16-1. The Hornets forfeited at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
In doubles action, sophomore
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and senior
Chané Hines (Johannesburg, South Africa) won 8-1 at the top flight and freshmen
Mariya Krachok (Kiev, Ukraine) and
Veronika Kalugina (Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia) blanked ASU’s tandem 8-0 at No. 2.
South Alabama dropped just one game in singles. Freshman
Ramona Ghermani (Bad Wimpfen, Germany), playing at No. 1 singles for the first time in her career, defeated
Nathalie Lorenzo 6-1, 6-0. Hines earned her first win of the season at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of
Mechelle Barton.
“The key is tomorrow we have to come out and keep adding to all the little positive things we have done so far this season and be ready if an opportunity presents itself to make a major breakthrough,” Keyser said.
The Jags play at Jacksonville State tomorrow at noon.
