WOMEN’S TENNIS TAKES WIN STREAK TO ALABAMA STATE, JACKSONVILLE STATE

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis program will look to build on its recent undefeated streak when it travels to Alabama State and Jacksonville State for a pair of midweek contests.

The Jaguars have won three straight in the month of March and enter the week with a 7-4 record. They will face Alabama State on Tuesday and Jacksonville State on Wednesday. It will mark the first-ever meeting between the schools.

“Anytime you win three in a row, it’s the beginning of a little streak, so automatically confidence comes with it,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “This next little stretch, with five or six matches on the road gives us an opportunity to work on our identity as playing on the road, because we’re going to have to beat teams away from home to get where we want to go.”

Propelling the team to its best start since 2009 has been the bottom three spots in the singles lineup. The Jags are a combined 26-4 at flights 4-6, including 10-0 at No. 6 and 9-1 at No. 5. Freshman Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) is 10-0 this spring and sophomore Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) is 9-0. They both bring 10-match win streaks into Tuesday’s clash.

“In the context of a college match, there is a huge advantage because you can apply pressure if you’re strong in the bottom part of the lineup,” Keyser noted. “Even the girls at the bottom of the lineup have to keep improving and working at their games because there will be times where they have to step up and play at the top positions.”

Alabama State is 0-9 in the current campaign and will be completing a three-match homestand Tuesday. The Hornets have been shut out in every match.

Jacksonville State is also on a recent skid, dropping six straight matches with four by shutout. Zoe Bizinos holds the Gamecocks’ best singles record at 5-4.

“The mindset for us is, everyone is good,” Keyser said. “We’ve struggled in the last year and a half, so for us to look at a team and decide whether they’re good or bad is not the right mindset. We just have to keep working on our own games, keep on improving and keep on becoming a better team.”
