One batter later, Cofield delivered a two-run double down the third-base line just past Samford third baseman Tyler Filliben to score Earley and Hook and give the Jags a 3-1 lead. Patterson followed with a two-run double to right field that pushed the USA lead to 5-1.
Butler, Miller and Putkonen had two hits, one RBI and one run scored each to lead the Bulldogs at the plate. Allison had one hit, a run scored and two RBI.
“Phillip Byrd did an outstanding job for us and kept us in the game,” USA head coach Mark Calvi said. “When you have a non-quality start and you need a guy to come out of the bullpen and keep it together and that’s what he did. He gave us a chance to win it late, but we didn’t pull it out. I’m proud of the work he did today. We made some errors and some fundamental mistakes in the field that we harp on in practice every day, and it got us today.”
The series will conclude with the rubber match at 1 p.m. Sunday at Stanky Field.
