MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama baseball scored 11 runs in the second inning en route to a 12-4 win over Jackson State Tuesday at Stanky Field to give head coach Mark Calvi his first career win.

“It’s good to get it done; it’s always good to win a game,” Calvi said of his first win as a head coach. “I’m just proud of the ways these guys played tonight. Coming off of a weekend where we were in every ballgame, these guys fought hard and took some things that we made some mistakes on. We were a lot more aggressive at the plate, but we still aren’t where I would like to see us offensively as far as swinging the bat and being aggressive.

“We took some fastballs once we had some runs on the board. I felt as though we were super-aggressive in the second inning. And that’s a credit to the players. (Anthony) Izzio did an outstanding job. I’m proud of this group. I couldn’t think of a better group of players and coaches to win my first game with.”

Jaguar right-hander Anthony Izzio (1-0) allowed only two unearned runs on three hits in six innings, and struck out four with a pair of walks in his first start as a Jaguar.

JSU right-hander Jose Garcia (0-1) suffered the loss in one inning pitched, allowing seven runs on five hits with a strikeout and three walks.

Jaguar left-handers James Traylor and Jordan Patterson pitched one shutout inning each.

Logan Kirkland went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI, one run scored and a walk to lead the Jags at the plate. Drew Cofield and Neil Hudson recorded two hits apiece, and Cofield also drove in a run. Nolan Earley had a double, two RBI and scored one run, and Patterson and Robby Campbell also had two RBI each.

Kendall Logan and Charles Epperson had two hits apiece to lead the Tigers at the plate.

After a scoreless first inning, USA broke the game open with an 11-run second inning in which 16 Jaguars came to the plate and totaled seven hits, highlighted by two-run doubles from Earley and Patterson, and RBI singles by Cofield, Kirkland and Nick Zaharion. Kirkland recorded two of his four hits in the second inning, and Campbell drove in two runs in the frame.

The 11-run second inning marked the most runs the Jags have scored in an inning since 2009, when they plated 10 runs as part of a 21-16 win over No. 22 Alabama at Stanky Field.

Jackson State scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI triple by Babineaux and scored its second run of the inning on a Jaguar error.

USA increased its lead to 12-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Kirkland that scored Hudson, who singled earlier in the inning.

Jackson State (2-1) added one run in the top of the seventh on an RBI triple by Glenn Walker, and added the game’s final run in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Epperson.

South Alabama (1-3) will return to action when this weekend when it hosts Samford in a three-game series at Stanky Field, with game one scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday night.
