MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama softball team will take on Nicholls Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Colonels Softball Complex in Thibodaux, La., in the third of 12 consecutive road games.
The Jaguars are 3-3 overall after an undefeated weekend at the Jacksonville State Invitational where they downed Southeastern Louisiana 8-1 on Feb. 17 and beat Southern Illinois 16-0 on Feb. 18.
The Colonels lead the all-time series with the Jags 5-4. In their last meeting, USA edged Nicholls 3-2 last season at Jaguar Field.
At the plate, South Alabama is led by freshman outfielder Alyssa Linn (Kimberly, Ala.) who holds a three-hit streak and has a team-leading batting average of .545. Linn was 4-for-8 with three runs and three RBI this past weekend at the JSU Invitational.
Junior Britany Campbell (Phoenix, Ariz.) is right behind Linn with a .462 overall batting average. She leads the Jaguars in slugging percentage (.846), on base percentage (.588), runs scored (5), hits (6), triples (1) and stolen bases (4). Over the weekend, Campbell went 3-for-3 with four runs and three RBI, including a three-run homer against Southern Illinois.
Senior Katy Neal (Pace, Fla.) is undefeated in the circle this season and paces the USA defense with 0.91 ERA. She has only allowed five hits and one run while recording six strikeouts on the year. Junior Jessica Dobson (DeMotte, Ind.) holds a 0.95 ERA and picked up the Jaguars’ only save of the year against Southeastern Louisiana.
After a three-loss weekend at the Quality Inn Classic in Troy, Ala., the Colonels hold a 1-7 overall record. In Troy, Nicholls lost to ETSU, Ball State and Eastern Kentucky. Their only win of the season came on Feb. 12 when they defeated Akron 5-1 at the Lion Classic in Hammond, La.
The Colonels are led offensively by Ashley Ray with a .400 batting average. Ray has tallied ten hits in 25 at-bats with five runs on the season. She has also recorded four home runs and nine RBI.
Nicholls has a team ERA of 5.42 predominantly splitting time between Katie Moulder (3.50 ERA), Rachael Hugghins (7.74 ERA) and Ashton Bennett (10.50 ERA). Moulder leads the Colonels with 26 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched. She has allowed 39 hits and 20 runs on the year.
