USA Defense Records Sixth Shutout of 2012 Season
MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama junior forward Linsey Snavely recorded the first Jaguar hat trick in four years on Friday, as six different USA women’s soccer student-athletes scored goals in a 9-0 undoing of UALR Friday night at The Cage.
Former USA soccer standout Brandi Smith was the last to accomplish the feat in 2008, when she scored three goals against Nicholls State on two different occasions during the season.
The Jaguars (7-6-1, 2-2-0 SBC) stampeded the Trojans’ defensive third from the opening whistle and were rewarded in the fifth minute when USA junior midfielder Clarissa Hernandez took a pass inside from Madison Rodwell and struck a weighted ball from 30 yards out that fell over the head of UALR keeper Natalie Marsh and into the net, giving the Jags a 1-0 lead.
USA junior forward Tatum Perry doubled the Jaguar advantage only two minutes later, dribbling through multiple Trojan defenders before chipping the visiting keeper from just outside five yards. Marsh’s goal kicks were hardly traveling to midfield from the start of the match, and USA won several headers in the UALR half, so visiting head coach Freddy Delgado exchanged Marsh for Shantel Wittke after less than 10 minutes had expired.
Wittke was tested immediately; the Jags followed Perry’s goal with 13 shots to UALR’s two before freshman Alyssa Mayer scored her first collegiate goal in the 33
rd minute, taking one touch from a Natalie Parson’s pass – made possible by a booming punt from USA keeper Melissa Drish – and beating Wittke one-on-one.
Ten minutes later, South Alabama redshirt-freshman forward Shawna Trunca also scored her first career goal by cutting inside the UALR penalty box off a crisp Tina Schaar pass and beating a defender to slot home the Jags’ fourth score of the first half.
“The gameplan tonight was to come out and be aggressive – attack the goal,” said USA head coach Mike Varga. “We did that from the start. We kept pushing the whole night, and we put the ball in the net.”
Only nine minutes into the restart, the Jaguars had doubled the halftime advantage, with Snavely scoring in the 49
th and 51
st minutes before Perry tallied her second marker of the night in the 53
rd. Snavely struck again 59 seconds later to raise the lead to 8-0 with 36 minutes remaining.
Senior forward Natalie Parsons scored her fifth career goal in the 74
th, scoring on a Trunca cross for a 9-0 Jaguar lead that would see the match out.
USA outshot the Trojans (1-12-0, 0-5-0 SBC) 42-12 in the match. USA keepers Drish and Lauren Arnold combined for four saves in what was the Jags’ sixth shutout of the season. The last time a USA team scored nine or more goals was in 2007 when the Jaguars downed Lamar 11-1 at the Holiday Inn Express Classic in Natchitoches, La.
With the match, USA raised its goals-per-game average from 0.85 to 1.43. The Jags had previously scored only 11 goals through the first 13 matches of the 2012 campaign.
“I challenged our center forwards Thursday night after training,” added Varga. “We haven’t gotten much production as far as goal scoring this year. I told them that we need a lot more out of them. They responded and gave us good minutes and good goals tonight.”
Drawing even in Sun Belt Conference play at 2-2, South Alabama will next face Arkansas State on Sunday at The Cage. The Red Wolves improved to 3-2 in the league with a win over Troy on Friday, amassing its ninth win of the season, the most in ASU school history. USA is 9-2-1 all-time versus ASU and 7-0 in Mobile.
Kickoff for Sunday’s match is slated for 1 p.m. Results will be posted to the Jaguar athletics webpage immediately following the match. All home soccer matches throughout the season will be free to all attendees. The Cage is located on Old Shell Road just east of Stanky Field.

Friday's scoreline was the second-highest any SBC team has scored this year, one short of Middle Tennessee's season-high 10 versus Alabama A&M.
-
Snavely is the third Sun Belt student-athlete to record a hat trick this season, along with Florida Atlantic's Claire Emslie and FIU's Chelsea Leiva.
-
Snavely's career-high six points versus UALR ties for the second-best total recorded by a Sun Belt player this year.
-
USA's eight assists on Friday night is the most of any SBC school this season. It's 26 points are the second most, behind Middle Tennessee's 27.
