Sun Belt Conference Soccer Standings
MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s soccer team will host Troy on Friday at 7 p.m. at The Cage to conclude the 2012 regular season campaign.
The Jaguars will don pink uniforms in honor of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Also, Friday will be senior night, as USA's two seniors, Natalie Parsons and Rylle Pannell will be honored before the game.
USA (8-8-3, 3-4-2 SBC) took four points from its Louisiana swing last week with a 4-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe and a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Louisiana-Lafayette, increasing its league point total to 11, sixth-best.
A point and spot behind USA on the table, Troy (8-9-2, 3-5-1 SBC) recorded wins over both Louisiana schools last week to earn its fourth-consecutive Sun Belt Conference Tournament berth, and the Trojans will be spirited heading into Friday’s match, as the tournament's six-seed is on the line.
The Jaguars are 4-3-1 all-time versus Troy and 1-1-1 in Mobile. The Trojans last visited The Cage in 2010 and won, 1-0. Last year, USA concluded its regular season by defeating Troy 2-1 at the Trojan Soccer Complex. USA is 5-2-2 at The Cage, while the Trojans are 3-4-1 on the road this year.
South Alabama is led offensively by junior midfielder Clarissa Hernandez, who has recorded 14 points this season on five goals and four assists. Against ULM last Thursday, Hernandez scored once and assisted on two other goals for a career-high four-point match total.
The Pensacola, Fla., native’s shot in the opening minutes of play against the Warhawks was collected by USA sophomore Madison Rodwell, who then deposited South Alabama’s first of four goals on the day, its second-highest scoring tally of year, behind a 9-0 thrashing of UALR on Oct.5.
Hernandez scored her second penalty of the year in the second half to extend the Jaguar lead to 3-0 over ULM, then she provided the corner kick that Shawna Trunca finished minutes from the final whistle to cap the scoreline.
After making 10 stops over the weekend and registering her fourth full shutout of the year against ULM, USA keeper Melissa Drish currently holds the highest save percentage of any SBC competitor. Her .855 statistic is a result of making 53 stops in 10 appearances, while allowing less than a goal per match (0.98), second-best in the conference.
The USA defense, as a unit, is tied for the league lead in shutouts this season with eight total – four in conference competition – and has allowed only nine goals through 10 league matches, tied for third-best in the SBC. USA’s resistance crew held seven of its first 15 opponents scoreless for a .467 shutout percentage that ranked as high as 39
th in the nation through early October.
Chelsey Williams paces the Trojans offensively, with eight goals and four assists for a team-leading 20 points. Cecilia Thorngren has tallied nine assists and four goals this year for 17 points. Trojan keeper Katie Comeno-Lewis has accrued the league’s second-highest save total with 55 through seven conference matches for an average of 7.86 per game.
