MOBILE, Ala. –
Stephen Cowherd, a three-year letterwinner for the University of South Alabama men’s basketball program, has been named the new basketball head coach at Miami Dade College.
Cowherd, who served as assistant coach for the Sharks last season, was promoted when
Matthew Eisele resigned.
"I'm very excited to have him. He's young, dynamic [and] a go-getter from FSU," MDC athletic director
Anthony Florenza told The Reporter, Miami Dade's student newspaper. "The campus is very excited to have Stephen on board."
A Coral Springs, Fla. native, Cowherd averaged 5.2 points in 84 career games at USA and was a member of two Sun Belt championship teams in 2005-06 and 2006-07. He was a career 38.9 percent shooter from 3-point land, including a 43.6 percentage his sophomore year.
"First, obviously, I'm excited to be named men's basketball coach," Cowherd said to the newspaper. "I'm a South Florida kid, grew up in Broward County [and] played a lot of games down in Dade. I'm looking forward to bringing the community into Miami Dade and hopefully packing this place."
Cowherd played his freshman season at Mississippi State, where he appeared in 23 games, before transferring to South Alabama.
Following his playing career, Cowherd served as graduate assistant at Florida State for two seasons. The Seminoles advanced to the NCAA Tournament both years.
