MOBILE, Ala. – Carlton Paris tossed his first career complete game and recorded a career-high eight strikeouts to lead University of South Alabama baseball to a 7-4 win over Arkansas State Sunday at Stanky Field.
Paris (3-4) allowed just two earned runs on six hits and issued only one walk to lead the Jaguars to a series sweep of the Red Wolves, which marked South Alabama’s second SBC series sweep of the season. The right-hander retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced in the game.
Paris held Arkansas State hitless until the top of the fourth when Todd Baumgartner flared a ball into left field that dropped in front of Jeff DeBlieux. ASU pushed across the game’s first run on a bases-loaded infield single by Logan Uxa one batter later. The Red Wolves doubled their lead to 2-0 on an RBI groundout by Brandon Milhouse later in the inning, and increased their lead to 3-0 on an RBI single by Tyler Smith.
But the Jags answered in the bottom of the fourth with five runs on five hits to grab a lead which they would not surrender. South Alabama cut the ASU lead to 4-1 on an RBI double by Nolan Earley, following a leadoff single by Brent Tanner. Brad Hook singled in Earley to cut the Red Wolves’ lead to 4-2, and Jordan Patterson followed with an RBI double to cut the deficit to one run. Hunt Griffith then followed with a two-run shot over the left field wall, his first career homer, on a 1-0 pitch from ASU right-hander Jacob Lee to give the Jags a 5-4 lead.
USA added the game’s final two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run double to right field by Patterson.
Lee (5-4) took the loss in five innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Patterson went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored to lead South Alabama at the plate. Earley finished 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and a run scored, and Griffith added a home run, two RBI and a run. Tanner recorded two hits and scored two runs in the game.
Uxa went 3-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored to lead ASU offensively. Smith added two hits and an RBI, and Zach George and Milhouse drove in one run apiece.
South Alabama (25-23, 12-12 SBC) improved to 55-18 all-time against Arkansas State (22-28, 10-14 SBC). The win marked the Jags’ first conference sweep since taking three games from UALR April 15-17 at Stanky Field.
USA will return to action next weekend when it travels to Bowling Green, Ky., for a three-game SBC series against Western Kentucky, beginning Friday at 6 p.m..
