HARRIS PITCHES INTO NINTH, LEADS JAGS TO 10-5 WIN OVER ASU

MOBILE, Ala. – Garrett Harris scattered 10 hits over 8 1/3 innings to lead the University of South Alabama baseball team to a 10-5 win over Arkansas State Friday night at Stanky Field.

Harris (6-3) allowed five runs and struck out five while issuing four walks to earn his sixth win of the season. The right-hander retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced in the game.

Every South Alabama starter recorded a hit in the game, led by Jeff DeBlieux who went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and a run scored and Jake Overstreet who went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Overstreet tied former Jaguar Tyrone Dixon for second on the career at-bats list with 792. Logan Kirkland drove in two runs in the game and added a hit, and Brad Hook hit his fourth home run of the season.

Andy Ferguson (5-3) took the loss in four innings pitched for the Red Wolves, and allowed six runs on eight hits with a strikeout and one walk.

Logan Uxa went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored to lead Arkansas State at the plate. Todd Baumgartner added two hits, one RBI and a run scored, and Zach Maggio had two hits and scored one run.

South Alabama (23-23, 10-12 SBC) scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the third inning when ASU shortstop Dustin Jones misplayed a grounder off the bat of Overstreet which allowed Taylor White to score. USA added its second run in the inning on a throwing error by third baseman Zach George on a grounder by Tanner which scored Overstreet. Earley gave the Jags a 3-0 lead later in the inning when he singled home Tanner from second base.

Arkansas State answered to tie the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Jordan Castaldo and two-run homer off the right field foul pole by Uxa.

The Jags broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom-half of the fourth on solo homer to right field by Hook. Jeff DeBlieux extended the USA lead to 5-3 later in the inning on an RBI single to right field. Overstreet doubled the Jag lead one batter later with an RBI single that hit off of ASU starter Ferguson, allowing Hunt Griffith to score after he reached on a single earlier in the inning.

ASU (22-26, 10-12 SBC) cut the Jaguar lead to 6-4 in the top of the sixth when Uxa singled to score Ryan Emery, who led off the inning with a walk.

South Alabama scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when DeBlieux and Overstreet scored on a throwing error by Castaldo in an attempt to throw out Overstreet at second base on a single by Tanner, which gave the Jags a 8-4 lead. USA added its third run in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Kirkland that scored Tanner.

ASU added a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Uxa, and scored one run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Baumgartner.

USA added the game’s final run in the bottom of the eighth inning on Kirkland’s second sacrifice fly of the game.

With the win, South Alabama snapped a seven-game losing skid and improved to 53-18 all-time against Arkansas State.
