MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The 2011 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Middle Tennessee State reached its conclusion Sunday night, with the University of South Alabama men's and women's teams finishing fourth and sixth, respectively.
The Western Kentucky women won their 17th consecutive SBC track title and the Topper men followed to boast their fourth in as many years.
Jaguars who were awarded gold medals Sunday included Joey Torres, who posted a 59.50m (195-02) stadium-record hammer throw effort that topped the charts, and Connor Smith, who cleared 4.78m (15-08.25) in the pole vault to secure a title.
Torres, who won the discus and hammer throw, was awarded Male Outstanding Field Performer for the championships. Lindsay Schwartz was awarded Female Outstanding Field Performer for her multi-gold performance this weekend, which included setting a new conference record in the women's heptathlon.
Head coach Paul Brueske said, "Despite all the setbacks with injuries we've had this season, I am extremely proud of the effort we put in and the perseverance this team has showed. We performed very well this weekend and I am proud to say that."
Other top performances Sunday included Noelle Jones's second-place finish in the women's javelin throw (43.72m/143-05). She was accompanied by Lacy Barger, who took fourth on a mark of 42.24m (138-07) and eighth-place Leah Hixon (36.25m/118-11).
Smith was joined in the pole vault top-eight by William Henley, who took third on a mark of 4.48m (14-08.25) and seventh-place Ashton Krause (4.33m/14-02.50). Krause also finished seventh in the men's high jump (1.91m/6-03.25).
Anton Graphenreed notched two second-place finishes in the men's 100-meter dash (10.58s) and 200-meter dash (21.24), while also serving as the anchor leg in the men's fourth-place 4X100-meter relay team (41.56s), which also included Tyler Agee, Ken Barefield and Tyrome Bivens.
Agee also finished sixth in the men's 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.81 seconds. Schwartz took home silver in the women's 400-meter hurdles (1:02.24) Sunday.
In the women's hammer throw, Latifah Johnson took home bronze on a mark of 54.21m (177-10) and Bobbie Williamson finished fifth (48.89m/160-05).
In the men's 1,500-meter run, Saber Salah took seventh (4:01.48), with Zac Edwards following in eighth in a time of 4:03.28. Salah also finished eighth in the men's 800-meter run (2:01.34).
Briana Aiken finished eighth in the women's triple jump on a mark of 11.94m (39-02.25).
