MEN’S BASKETBALL SIGNS JONES-GOLDSTEIN TO NLI

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men’s basketball program has signed Freddie Jones-Goldstein to a National Letter of Intent to play for the 2011-12 season, head coach Ronnie Arrow announced Wednesday.

Jones-Goldstein, a 6-0, 165 guard, currently attends Motlow State Community College in Lynchburg, Tenn. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

A two-time National Junior College Athletic Association All-American, Jones-Goldstein averaged 16.3 points in two seasons at Motlow State for head coach Jerry Nichols and is listed as the No. 117 prospect by JucoJunction.com.

“He can really shoot the ball,” Arrow said. “He’s quick and can fit into our scheme of things. Coach Nichols said he’ll really get after you on defense so I think he brings what we want in this program both on offense and defense.”

The St. Augustine, Fla. (Pulaski [Wisc.] HS) native is sixth in school history in career points (829) and scoring average. That includes his freshman year where he averaged 19.3 points and shot 49.1 percent from the floor and 46.8 percent from 3-point land.

“One of the reasons we liked him is Coach Nichols stressed defense, pushing the ball and doing the right things,” Arrow said. “Freddie was one of the hardest workers, if not the hardest worker on the team. And that’s what we want on our team in order to win big. Motlow might not have had the overall talent of some of the teams they played, but they beat the bigger, stronger teams because he got them to play as a group. The players accepted their roles which is what we want in this program.”

An excellent outside shooter, Jones-Goldstein ranks third and tied for fourth in school history in single-season 3-pointers. He converted 72 3s in 2009-10 and 64 last season, and his 136 career triples are second in MSCC history. Jones-Goldstein has hit eight treys in game once and six in a game twice.
