MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team will battle the 64th-ranked Georgia State Panthers on the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts at 11 a.m. Sunday.
“Georgia State is a good team with quality players,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “This will be a good opportunity to see and feel the level of play of a ranked team and to gauge what we need to improve on in the future.”
The Jags lead the all-time series with the Panthers 7-1. Last season GSU secured their first win of the series with their 6-1 victory over USA in Mobile.
The Jaguars are 1-9 in their spring campaign with their only win of the season coming at home against Austin Peay on March 11. South Alabama enters the match after a two-loss weekend in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Jags dropped their match against Sun Belt Conference rival Denver 6-1 on March 26 and fell to Middle Tennessee 4-3 on March 27.
USA’s top singles performer is junior Chané Hines (Johannesburg, South Africa). Hines is 6-4 this spring and 7-7 overall. When Hines pairs up with the Jags’ lone senior, Katie Welch, the duo is undefeated on the No. 1 court.
The Panthers (11-3) split two road matches last week defeating Old Dominion 4-3 before dropping a 5-2 decision to No. 32 Virginia Commonwealth.
GSU boasts the No. 67 doubles tandem in the country in Abigail Tere-Apisah and Maryna Kozachenko. The pair has gone 8-2 in dual matches.
Tere-Apisah also leads the Panthers in singles action with a 10-1 record in the No. 1 and No. 2 flights so far this season. She is the holder of a three-match win streak and is undefeated in the No. 1 spot.
Admission to all South Alabama home matches is free.
