MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama track and field team will return to action Wednesday when it competes in the Battle of I-10 held hosted by Tulane in New Orleans, La. The team is coming off a number of personal best marks met at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 27-28.
"This will be our first meet of the outdoor season and we feel like some of our best athletes will be returning with a great deal of improvement," head coach Paul Brueske said.
Junior Lindsay Schwartz scored 3,585 points to capture the pentathlon championship at the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships with a number of personal-best finishes and high marks in the field and combined events.
The team garnered 11 top-eight finishes on the second day of the championships to total 17 for the weekend. Schwartz was the top point-getter, scoring 10 points for winning the pentathlon, and Steven Nobles grabbed eight points after placing second in the men's weight throw.
Both the men's and women's teams finished ninth in the competition, with Middle Tennessee taking the men's crown and Western Kentucky hoisting the women's trophy.
Returming for the Jags this outdoor season will be Zac Edwards, who has been battling a minor injury throughout the indoor season, and fellow senior distance runner Saber Salah. Salah, who is returning from French soil after handling personal issues dealing with the overthrow of the Egyptian government, earned multiple all-conference honors during the 2010 outdoor campaign.
Both Edwards and Salah, represented South Alabama at last year’s NCAA Regional in May.
