USA WOMEN'S TENNIS HEADS SOUTH FOR SPRING BREAK ACTION

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team heads to Florida Tuesday for a grueling four matches in five days.

USA’s opponents include No. 62 Boston University, No. 58 Florida International, North Texas and Florida Atlantic.

“It’s going to be a tough stretch especially with the three matches in a row,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “Hopefully in the future we’ll learn how to play three days in a row and win conference tournaments. It’s a nice little test. If our fight and our attitude are good for all four matches I’ll be happy with the way things are going.

South Alabama enters the week after downing Austin Peay 4-3 on March 11 in their first win of 2011. Jaguar junior Alina Volman (Lugansk, Ukraine) is 2-2 in her spring campaign. Both of Volman’s wins came in straight sets.

The Jags will take on Boston University first on Tuesday in Boca Raton, Fla. at 11 a.m. South Alabama leads the all-time series with Boston University 1-0. USA defeated the Terriers 4-3 in their last meeting on Feb. 9, 2006 in Boston.

The Terriers are 6-4 so far this spring and boast the No. 7 player in the Northeast region in Stefanie Nunic. Nunic and her partner Vivien Laszloffy are the 68th-ranked doubles tandem in the country.

The Jaguars’ next opponent of the week is Sun Belt Conference foe North Texas. The match will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. in Miami. The all-time series with the Mean Green is split at 1-1. North Texas picked up their first win against USA last season in a 7-0 win in Mobile.

North Texas is 3-8 in dual matches. They will match up with Florida International on Tuesday afternoon before taking on the Jags. The Mean Green’s top performer is Paula Dinuta, ranked No. 15 in the Texas region.

South Alabama will stay in Miami for their next match against another Sun Belt Conference Rival Florida International on Friday at 2 p.m. The Jaguars lead all-time series with FIU 10-9. In their last meeting the then 38th-ranked Panthers blanked USA 7-0 in Mobile last year.

The Panthers are 7-5 overall this season and undefeated on their home courts. The No. 98 player in the country, Liset Brito, plays No. 1 singles for FIU. Brito is the holder of a six-match win streak.

USA returns to Boca Raton on Friday for their final match of the break against Florida Atlantic at 11 a.m. The Jaguars have the only win in the all-time series with the Owl. The teams have not played each other since March 12, 2008 when South Alabama downed FAU 6-1.

The Owls (6-9) have four matches before their bout with the Jags. In their most recent match FAU topped Troy 4-3 to put their win-streak at four matches. Their top performer, Marlene Ryan, is 9-6 in dual matches and holds a four-match win streak.
