USA vs. VCU box score
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –The 53rd-ranked Virginia Commonwealth Monarchs (14-3) shut out the University of South Alabama men’s tennis team (4-4) 6-0 Monday afternoon.
Due to inclement weather the match was moved indoors and featured only singles play.
"Today was hard,” said USA head coach Nick Brochu. “We played indoors for the first time this year and the surface was very different. VCU is a very good team. We played well, but Virginia Commonwealth was tougher than us. To beat ranked teams like VCU you have to do more than just play well.”
The Monarchs picked up their seventh-straight win by taking all six singles matches in straight sets.
VCU’s Camill Salomon topped senior Jairo Seur (Amsterdam, Netherlands) 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 5 flight to give the Monarchs the first point of the day. Freshman Parker Allen (Hot Springs, Ark.) followed on the No. 6 court with his 6-3, 6-0 loss to Filip Svensson.
Jaguar sophomore Alexandre Bernard (Soisy Sur Seine, France) dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Max Wennakoski at No. 2 singles followed by Hanno Bartsch’s (Pretoria, South Africa) 6-1, 6-3 loss to Jamie Vazquez in the No. 3 spot. At No. 4 singles junior Dauw Kruger fell to Antoine Baroz 6-4, 7-5.
On the No. 1 court junior Romain Boacert battled the No. 102 player in the country, Tim Johannsen, to tiebreakers in two sets. Bocaert ultimately dropped the match 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5).
"Romain played a great match, but I have to give credit to his opponent,” said Brochu. “He stayed focused and fought hard to win two close sets. I am very proud of Romain. He played hard today, but fell a little short. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but I told him to stay focus on the rest of the season and if he plays every match like today he will win most of his remaining matches. "
The Jags will take on Old Dominion Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Newport News, Va.
