JAG TRACK AND FIELD TEAM ENDS INDOOR SEASON WITH HIGH MARKS AT CHAMPIONSHIP

Lindsay Schwartz captured the women's pentathlon championship at the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships.

JONESBORO, Ark. - University of South Alabama track and field junior Lindsay Schwartz scored 3,585 points to capture the Sun Belt Conference Indoor pentathlon championship at the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Championships Sunday with a number of personal best finishes and high marks in the field and combined events.

Schwartz was one of three Lady Jags to place in the women's pentathlon, with her 3,585 points that earned all-SBC honors, an improvement over her last point total of 3,466 at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational. Johnnie Borries took fourth with a score of 3,392 and freshman Leah Hixon scored 3,233 for eighth.

The team garnered 11 top-eight finishes Sunday to bring them to 17 for the weekend. Lindsay Schwartz was the top point getter Sunday, scoring 10 points for winning the pentathlon, and Steven Nobles grabbed eight points after placing second in the men's weight throw.

Both the men's and women's teams finished ninth in the competition, with Middle Tennessee State taking the men's crown and Western Kentucky hoisting the women's trophy.

"Overall, I though we had some bright spots in the meet," head coach Paul Brueske said. "The multis were the highlight of the meet for us."

Shannon Stever finished fourth in the women's pole vault with a 3.60 meter effort, her second-best career mark. Magrina Chepkoech finished the women's 5,000 meter run in a personal-best time time of 17:50.76 to finish fifth. Briana Aiken notched an eighth place finish in the women's triple jump on an 11.88 meter leap.

Nobles's second-place finish in the weight throw on a 17.82-meter toss was good enough to land him on the program's all-time list. Coming off a recent injury, Joey Torres place sixth with a throw of 16.86 meters.

Ashton Krause finished  seventh in the men's heptathlon with a personal-best score of 4,696. Garrett Schumacher finished immediately behind him at eighth with a personal-best point total of 4,674.

Dominique Blue also took eighth in the men's triple jump with a second-best career mark of 14.35 meters.

Brueske said that he believes the high marks his team placed this weekend will be motivation going into the outdoor season.

"We are looking forward to outdoor competition, as we will hopefully have our key athletes that red-shirted during the indoor season back," Brueske said. "We will also get some help from athletes coming fromt he fotball team."

The Jags will have a short layover to prepare, as the first competition of the outdoor season  will be the Battle of I-10 on March 9 in New Orleans, La.
