MOBILE, Ala. – Fresh off of a three-game sweep of UT-Martin last weekend to open the season, University of South Alabama baseball will travel to Jackson, Miss., to face Jackson State at 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at Robert “Bob” Braddy Field.
Jaguar right-hander Dustin Crenshaw is scheduled to start Tuesday’s contest. Crenshaw pitched two shutout innings in Friday’s 6-1 win over UTM, and allowed just two hits while recording three strikeouts.
South Alabama is tied for third in the Sun Belt Conference with a team ERA of 3.67 and tied for fourth in strikeouts with 20. Through three games, opponents are hitting just .248 against Jaguar pitching. USA has allowed just seven walks so far this season, and is allowing less than one hit per inning.
The Jaguars swept a season-opening doubleheader against Jackson State last season at Stanky Field, and lead the all-time series 8-0.
USA second baseman Logan Kirkland leads the Jaguars in batting average (.556), doubles (3), slugging percentage (.889) and on-base percentage (.667), and is tied with Taylor White for the team lead in hits with five. Kirkland ranks second in the league in slugging, tied for second in doubles, tied for third in on-base percentage and tied for fourth in batting average heading into Tuesday’s game at Jackson State. White is tied for the SBC lead in stolen bases with three.
Third baseman Jake Overstreet drove in multiple runs and hit safely in every game of the Jags’ three-game season-opening series. He homered and drove in three runs in Friday’s season opener, doubled and drove in two runs in Saturday’s contest, and capped the weekend with a double, two RBI and three runs scored in Sunday’s series finale. Overstreet finished the weekend with nine total bases and extended his hitting streak to nine games, dating back to May 20 of last season.
The Thomasville, Ala., native has driven in at least one run in seven consecutive games, dating back to May 22 of last year. He surpassed former Jaguar Keith Mohler on the career RBI list over the weekend, and now ranks eighth all-time at South Alabama. Overstreet is tied for third in the SBC in RBI with seven heading into Tuesday’s contest.
Jackson State (1-1) fell 3-1 to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in its season opener Friday, but rebounded to knock off Florida A&M 13-4 Friday night. Baseball America picked the Tigers to finish first in the East Division this season.
JSU boasts three student-athletes on the Preseason all-Southwestern Athletic Conference team, led by right-handed pitcher Quintavious Drains. Drains (1-0) went 13-4 last season with a 4.35 ERA, and recorded 93 strikeouts in 117 innings pitched, and led the SWAC in ERA. Third baseman Willie Wesley made the all-SWAC preseason team as a third baseman after batting .345 last year and stealing 52 bases. Kendall Logan, a transfer from Copiah-Lincoln CC, was voted all-SWAC as well.
