MOBILE, Ala. – Haley Hopkins hit her fifth home run of the season Saturday to help lead South Alabama to its five inning 18-0 shutout against Evansville in game one, before falling to the UT-Chattanooga 4-2 in the second game.
Against UE, Brittany Fowler, Meghan Collins and Hopkins led the Jags at the plate. Fowler went 3-for-3 driving in a career high five RBI, and scoring a pair, while Meghan Collins had a 3-for-3 performance scoring two. Hopkins went 3-for-3 scoring four and driving in four. The Gulf Shores, Ala., native hit her fifth home run of the season making her USA’s all-time career home run leader.
Julie Moss went 2-for-4 at the plate scoring one and driving in two. Jenny Stevens, Brittany Campbell, Kamee Vessey, Katy Neal and Carolina Mendoza all recorded a hit for the Jags.
The Jags (6-3) went up 2-0 in the bottom of the second when Hopkins launched a home run over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the first. Fowler singled up the middle and advanced to second on an error driving in Christin Crocker who walked to begin the inning.
Fowler hit a two-RBI single up the middle driving in Hopkins and Crocker.
The Jags broke the game open in the top of the fourth scoring 14 runs on 11 hits. Highlighted by, Vessey’s RBI-triple
And Mendoza’s RBI-single.
Lindsey Croft (2-0) earned the win in five innings striking out two Purple Aces batters, while junior pitcher Maggie
Little (0-2) was charged with the loss.
Against UT-Chattanooga, Fowler went 2-for-4 at the plate and Moss went 2-for-3 driving in one.
The Jaguars cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth when reliever Irwin came into finish the contest. Stevens led it off with a double down the left field line. Then, Fowler and Hopkins recorded infield singles as Steven came across the plate. One batter later, Moss singled to right field.
Junior pitcher Michelle Fuzzard (2-1) earned the win in 5.2 innings. She reentered in the seventh to record
Final two outs.
The Lady Mocs jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second scoring two runs on two hits. sophomore first baseman Kasey Tydingco drew a leadoff walk and scored on outfielder Della Harrison’s double to left center off the wall. Harrison advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Natalie Powers
UTC tacked on back-to-back home runs in the third and the fourth inning.
Morgan Druhan (2-1) took the loss for the Jags in 2.1 innings. Hannah Campbell came in for 4.2 innings of relief striking out six Lady Moc batters.
The Jaguars return to action Sunday when they take on Southeastern Louisiana at 2:30 in the final game of the South Alabama Invitational.

The Jags broke the program’s record for runs scored in an inning (11, last vs. Nicholls State, 4/25/07) and runs scored in a game (17, last vs. Nicholls State, 4/25/07).
