USA MEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO SOUTH FLORIDA 7-0

USA vs. USF box score

TAMPA, Fla.
– The University of South Alabama men’s tennis team (2-2) dropped its second match of the season to South Florida (3-1) Saturday at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts by a score of 7-0.

“South Florida played a great match,” said USA head coach Nick Brochu. “They started strong in doubles and were very aggressive in singles. We fought well, but not hard enough to compete with a great team like USF.”

In doubles action Jaguar senior Jairo Seur (Amsterdam, Netherlands) partnered with junior Christian Kuehne (Morbach, Germany) on the No. 3 court where they fell 8-2 to the Bulls’ Wael Kilani and Federico Sabogal. Jamal Adderly and Lucas Jovita clinched the doubles point for USF with their 8-4 victory over junior Hanno Bartsch (Pretoria, South Africa) and sophomore Alexandre Bernard (Soisy Sur Seine, France) in the No. 1 position. Juniors Romain Bocaert (Lille, France) and Dauw Kruger (Pretoria, South Africa) were topped by Yannick Yoshizawa and Romain Deridder 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.

“We struggled in doubles today,” said Brochu. “In the previous three matches we were able to set the tone, winning the doubles point and playing aggressively. We were a little slow today and did not jump on opportunities when we had them.”

South Florida continued their winning ways in singles, taking all but one of their matches in straight sets.

In the No. 3 spot Kuehne was down 6-1, 3-0 before he retired to Deridder due to an injury. Seur’s 6-0, 6-1 loss to Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard came next on the No. 6 court.

Jovita secured the match-winning point with his 6-2, 6-2 win over Bocaert at No. 1 singles.

Kruger fell to Sabogal 6-1, 6-3 on the No. 4 court, followed by Bartsch’s 6¬-3, 6-4 loss to Yoshizawa in the No. 5 spot.

Bernard finished last in his 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), (10-5) battle with Kilani in the No. 2 position.

“Alex put up a very good fight today,” said Brochu. “I am proud of him fighting until the end, even when the match was over. He is playing at a high level and he is becoming one of the best players in the conference.”

The Jags return to action Wednesday when they take on Sun Belt Conference foe No. 70 Troy in Troy, Ala.

“The team is struggling,” said Brochu. “I don't want to make excuses, but it's hard to win when we have three out of six players injured and sick. We need to get some rest and get ready for our next match against Troy.”
