BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Garrett Schumacher edged Samford’s Joshua McCombs in the men’s 1,000-meter run by two-hundredths of a second to cap off a school-record indoor heptathlon performance on Thursday at the Birmingham Ice Breaker.
Schumacher’s accomplishment followed a school-record indoor pentathlon performance that Lindsay Schwartz set on Wednesday, making the Ice Breaker a historical meet for the Jaguar multi-events crew.
“Not only did we set some personal bests, we set school records as well,” said head track and field coach Paul Brueske. “Coach (Randy) Flach has done an incredible job molding these multi-event athletes, they deserve to be amongst the nation’s best.”
Tori Lawson, who led the women’s cross country team in every meet earlier this fall, bested her own fifth-place all-time mark in the 3,000-meter run by a full second with a third-place 10:12.06 effort.
Anton Graphenreed notched two third-place finishes on Thursday, recording a personal-best time in the indoor 200-meter dash to come in third (21.78s), ranking him ninth amogst NCAA competitors in the event, while finishing the 60-meter dash in 6.87 seconds.
Tyler Agee, the highest finisher for the Jags on the second and final day of competition, lowered his best 60-meter hurdle time on a runner-up 8.31-second finish. Erika Saxton rounded out South Alabama personal bests on a 7.72-second 60-meter dash performance.
Through four events Wednesday night, Schumacher led a Jaguar 4-5-6 combination alongside Ashton Krause and freshman Mikel Magnusson. Ben Davies (unattached) was the leader, with Bulldogs Joshua McCombs and Bo Ackerson-Gilroy closely behind.
On Thursday, it was McCombs who struck first in the battle for third place, as he took the 60-meter hurdle tape ahead of both Davies (2nd) and Ackerson-Gilroy (3rd) – Schumacher settled for fifth. However, the Spanish Fort, Ala., native surged back to tie for third in the pole vault (4.04m), this time leaving McCombs back at seventh, thanks to timely point-taking performances from Mikel Magunsson (T-4th - 4.04m, 628 points) and Ashton Krause (5th – 3.74m, 546 pts.).
It was in the final event – the 1,000-meter run – that Schumacher, who was leading McCombs by only 34 points, galloped across the line first, finishing in 2:49.70 to McCombs’s 2:49.72 and taking third-place along with the school record 4,800 points. Schumacher's event total currently stands ranks seventh in NCAA Division I.
Krause and Magnusson finished fifth and sixth with point accumulations of 4,543 and 4,071, respectively.
Bobbie Williamson finished third in the women’s shot put on an indoor personal-best 12.30m mark, Shayna McCarver also notched an indoor personal-best finish, taking fifth in the triple jump (11.39m) and Shakeria Williams ran a 25.19 in the women’s 200-meter dash to take sixth. Erikka Williams took seventh in both the 60-meter dash (7.76s) and long jump (5.41m) as well.
Shannen Weyer and Mary Finn finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the women’s 3,000-meter run in times of 10:45.59 and 10:46.87.
William Henley notched a fifth-place finish in the pole vault on a mark of 4.35m, Connor Smith finished sixth in the high jump (1.90m) and Tevin Barnett took seventh in the men’s 60-meter hurdles (8.64s). Jeremy Jones finished seventh in the long jump (6.39m).
Adam Patterson finished fourth in the shot put on a heave of 13.93m, and was followed by Jeff Long in fifth place (13.58m) and Jarrod Kedzior in eighth (13.33m).
