BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – With a 5-under-par 67 in the fourth round Friday, former University of South Alabama men’s golfer Ben Briscoe advanced to the final qualifying stage of the PGA Tour’s Q-school.
It was the second time in four days that Briscoe, who played for the Jaguars from 2003-05, carded a 67 in the second qualifying stage of Q-school, which was held at the Southern Hills Plantation Club. He finished in a tie for 14th place with a 6-under-par 282 total at the par-72, 7,557-yard course.
His final round included eight birdies — matching his total from the first three days combined — as he shot a 4-under 32 on the front nine. After bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12, Briscoe posted four birdies in a five-hole stretch to move on.
The top 21 players, plus those who tied for the final position, in the field of 69 advanced to the Q-school’s final qualifying stage.
The final qualifying stage of Q-school will be held at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament and TPC Stadium Courses in La Quinta, Calif., from Nov. 30-Dec. 5. The lowest 25 finishers and any tying for 25th position after the conclusion of play in the final qualifying stage will be eligible for 2012 PGA Tour membership, while by advancing to the final qualifying stage Briscoe is already eligible for Nationwide Tour membership.
A two-year letterwinner at USA who originally hails from Wales, Briscoe helped the Jaguars win the Sun Belt Conference championship his senior season. He would go on to post a 218 54-hole score at the NCAA West Regional in Palo Alto, Calif., a figure that was still tied for 10th on the school’s low NCAA individual total list prior to last season.
