Jackson, Miss. –The University of South Alabama soccer team fell 1-0 to Jackson State Friday afternoon in its season opener at the JSU Soccer Field.
“We gave up a key goal late in the match when we needed to put Jackson State away,” Jaguar head coach Mike Varga said. “It was a disappointing loss today, but it was a good learning experience that we can build on for the rest of the season.”
Liana Knight scored the game-winning goal for the Tigers (1-0-0) at the 77:22 mark of the second period.
USA (0-1-0) outshot JSU 20-6, but could not find the net. Brandi Smith led all players with seven shots, including two on goal, and Kristen Sutton added four.
Allison Lane made seven saves for JSU to preserve the shutout, while Melissa Drish was credited with two in her collegiate debut.
The Jags return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. against Louisiana State at the LSU Soccer Complex.
