JAGUARS FALL AT USM, 15-5

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss scored multiple runs in four innings, including a six-run fifth inning, to defeat University of South Alabama baseball 15-5 Wednesday night at Pete Taylor Park.

USA out-hit the Golden Eagles, 16-14, but left 15 runners on base. Southern Miss pitchers held the Jaguars scoreless for the final three innings of the game, and for six total innings.

Clint Reynolds went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Jags at the plate. Jake Overstreet went 3-for-5 with two RBI, and Brandon Brown and Adam Heisler added three hits each. Tyler Vick added two hits in the game.

Southern Miss second baseman Taylor Walker went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored to lead the Golden Eagles at the plate. Mark Ellis, Joey Archer and Tyler Koelling added two hits apiece.

USM left-hander Jeff Stanley (3-0) earned the win in one shutout inning, allowing two hits while striking out one.

USA right-hander Dustin Crenshaw (2-1) suffered the loss in one inning, allowing three runs on two hits while issuing two walks.

Ellis gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a bases-loaded, two-run single to right field. Dillon Day extended the USM lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to left-center field to score Adam Doleac, who reached base on a walk earlier in the inning.

The Golden Eagles took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning  on a ground out by Kameron Brunty to score Travis Graves, who doubled to lead off the inning. USM increased its lead to 5-0 later in the inning on a fielder's choice by Doleac to score Koelling, and extended its lead to 6-0 when Walker scored on an attempted steal by Doleac.

USA left fielder Reynolds cut the USM lead to 6-2 in the top of the fourth with a bases-loaded single to center field to score Sean Laird and Taylor White, who reached on a walk and fielder's choice, respectively.

The Jags cut the USM lead in half in the top of the fifth inning when Vick delivered a two-out double down the left field line to score Laird, who reached base on a walk.

USM increased its lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a bases-loaded walk by Graves, and took an 8-3 lead one batter later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Koelling. The Golden Eagles added their ninth run of the game, and third of the inning, on an error by Brown. Brunty delivered a two-run double down the right field line later in the inning to increase the USM lead to 10-3, before Walker hit a two-run home run to left field to push the Golden Eagle lead to 12-3.

USA cut the Southern Miss lead to 12-5 in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run single to right field by Overstreet, but USM answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Graves and an error by Reynolds, to extend its lead to 14-5.

USM scored the game's final run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

USA (28-18) will return to action when it hosts a three-game Sun Belt Conference series with Florida Atlantic, beginning Fri., May 7, at 6 p.m. at Stanky Field.

 NOTES:  Heisler extended his on-base streak to 26 games, and extended his hit streak to eight games ... Heisler has now hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games ... Brown extended his hitting streak to eight games ... Tanner has reached base safely in 29 of his last 30 games ... USA fell to 52-27 all-time against Southern Miss, and dropped its fifth consecutive game in Hattiesburg.
