BASEBALL RALLIES IN NINTH TO CLINCH SERIES AT ASU

JONEBSORO, Ark. - University of South Alabama baseball scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally from one run down and knock off Arkansas State 7-6 and clinch its sixth Sun Belt Conference series of the season.

Adam Heisler drove in the game-tying run with a one-out single in the top of the ninth, and Jake Overstreet drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Heisler from third.

"It was a first-pitch changeup, and I got in the box thinking about going the opposite way," Heisler said. "I had it in my head that I was going to hit something hard on the ground. I was surprised he left it up, and I took advantage of it."

USA right-hander D.D. Hanks (9-2) tossed his fifth complete game of the season to earn the win. Hanks scattered 13 hits, and allowed six runs while striking out five and issuing three walks. The Saraland, Ala., native pitched seven scoreless innings in the game.

"Our guys have fought back all year long, so I just stayed up and tried to stay ahead in counts," Hanks said. "I knew it was game over after we scored in the ninth. You have to want to be in that position, and Coach [Scot] Sealy just told me to get it done."

Heisler went 3-for-5 with three RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base to lead the Jags at the plate. Taylor White went 3-for-5 with one run scored, and collected his fourth consecutive three-hit game. Eight Jaguar starters hit safely in the game.

ASU right-hander John Koch (1-3) took the loss in two innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three and walking one.

Red Wolf first baseman Murray Watts went 3-for-5 with a double, one RBI and one run scored to lead ASU at the plate. Five Red Wolves collected multiple hits in the game, led by Watts.

Arkansas State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Watts that scored Giovanni Garcia. Michael Faulkner scored the game's first run on a wild pitch.

USA tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning on an infield single by Heisler that scored Tyler Vick, and an RBI single to left field by Jake Overstreet which plated Heisler.

ASU answered to take a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs on six hits. Jordan Kimball delivered a bases-loaded, two-run single to left-center field to put the Red Wolves up 4-2. Faulkner and Cody Pace added consecutive RBI singles in the inning.

The Jags cut the ASU lead to one run in the top of the fifth inning when Brandon Brown drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Sean Laird. Heisler later reached on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to score the second run of the inning. Zach Grichor cut the Arkansas State lead to 6-5 with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Vick.

South Alabama took its first lead of the game in the top of the ninth inning with two runs on three hits. Brown started the Jaguar rally with a single to right-center field to lead off the inning. He then stole scored, and scored on Heisler's  game-tying single to center field. Grichor followed with a single to right field before Overstreet put the Jags ahead with his sacrifice fly.

"We've had a couple of big come-from-behind wins, but to do it this late was big," USA head coach Steve Kittrell said. "The guys kept battling and we had some timely hits when we needed them. D.D. [Hanks] threw well today and kept us in the game. It was a huge win, and one that we really needed to have."

USA (28-16, 15-6 SBC) returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Thibodeaux, La., to take on Nicholls State.
