USA WOMEN'S TENNIS EDGED BY SBC RIVAL TROY 5-2

MOBILE, Ala. – Troy University’s women’s tennis team continued their win streak, currently at seven matches, with a 5-2 victory over South Alabama Sunday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

“We had a few more solutions than problems today,” USA head coach Jaco Keyser said. “We played decent doubles and we showed improvement at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles. All in all we are improving.”

In doubles play, sophomore Chané Hines paired with Marie Boura to defeat the Trojans’ Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt 8-5 at the No. 1 flight. From the No. 2 spot, the Jaguar tandem of Katie Welch and Jess Courtnell dropped a tough 8-6 decision to Emma Smith and Lauren Simpson clinching the doubles point for Troy.

Boura earned the first USA point of the match with her quick 6-1, 6-3 win over Simpson at No. 2 singles. Welch followed at No. 1 with a straight-sets victory over Troy’s Grymel 6-1, 6-4.

Troy picked up wins at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions. South Alabama’s Hines lost a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3, (10-7) match to Guijt at the No. 3 position. At No. 5 the Trojans’ Rosaura Ramirez-Vega did not lose a game in her 6-0, 6-0 sweep of South Alabama’s Jessica Houston. The match was decided on the No. 4 court when Courtnell fell 6-3, 6-4 to the Trojans’ Stephanie Vieira.

The Trojans earned wins at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles by default.

The Jags will close out their six-match homestand Apr. 4 against Georgia State at 11 a.m. on the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts. Admission to all home matches is free.
