SOCCER DROPS CONFERENCE OPENER IN OVERTIME

JONESBORO, Ark. - University of South Alabama soccer dropped its Sun Belt Conference opener Friday night, falling to Arkansas State, 4-3, in overtime.

USA goalkeeper Katie Berry broke the program's single-game saves record with 18 saves in the contest, breaking former Jag Amber Angermeier's mark of 17 saves, which she set in 2002 against Tennessee.

USA (2-7-0, 0-1-0) took an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute of the match when Landi Wilson netted her third goal of the season on a cross from Liz Clark inside the left side of the box.

ASU (4-4-1, 1-0-0) scored goals in the 31st and 41st minutes of the first half to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

The Jags answered early in the second half when Brandi Smith scored in the 49th minute on an assist from Wilson to tie the game 2-2.

ASU scored in the 66th minute to take a 3-2 lead, however, Smith tied the match in the 75th minute on her second goal of the game off of an assist from Clark.

The Red Wolves scored the game-winning goal in overtime off of a corner kick in the 96th minute.

"We had some opportunities, and we outworked them in spurts, but we still made some costly mistakes," USA head coach Mike Varga said. "I give Arkansas State credit; they hung in there and got the victory."

USA returns to SBC action Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. match against UALR at Burns Park Soccer Complex in Little Rock, Ark.
