BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of South Alabama Department of Athletics lost a longtime supporter and contributor to game operations when public address announcer Charles "Gary" Godwin passed away Saturday night after battling health issues in recent years.
"Gary was a true Jaguar and even more importantly a wonderful man," Jaguar Director of Athletics Dr. Joel Erdmann said. "His loyalty in service to the department and University along with his friendship will never be forgotten."
Godwin first worked with Jaguar Athletics in 1999, and over the last 15-plus years has handled public address duties at numerous USA men's basketball and baseball contests. Â A 1971 graduate of South Alabama, Godwin served as a client relations director at CCS since 2003; he also had professional experience as a marketing director and served as media relations director for the Mobile Wizards af2 indoor football team from 2003-04.
"The one thing I will always remember about Gary was his genuine concern for others even when things were not going well for himself," Hal Williams, USA Associate Athletic Director, stated. Â "He always had a smile on his face and a kind word for all he came in touch with. Â He had a sincere love for the University of South Alabama."
"We will all miss Gary not only as a co-worker but also the man he was, good and kind," added John Singletary, Assistant Athletic Director. Â "I loved Gary and I am a better person for having known him. Â I am proud that he considered me his friend."
Godwin is survived by his wife Susan and son Matthew, also a USA graduate who assists the athletic department at home events. Â He will be recognized when the Jaguar men's basketball team faces Southern Mississippi at the Mitchell Center on Monday, Dec. 14.
