Scapin Shuts Out Panthers to Even the Series

MOBILE, Ala. | Sydney Scapin tossed a complete-game shutout Saturday afternoon as South Alabama evened the Sun Belt Conference series with a 4-0 win at Jaguar Field.

In her seven innings of work, Scapin (7-7) allowed just two hits and saw just four Georgia State (24-21, 4-10 SBC) batters reach base, while she struck out nine and walked just one.

Presley Lively and Gracie Dees each recorded multiple hits to lead the South Alabama offense (25-19, 9-5 SBC) .

Key Moments
•    South Alabama jumped out to the early lead in the opening frame courtesy of Kayden Dunn's two-run home run, this one coming off a 1-1 pitch from Briana Bowers, scoring Oliva Branstetter who has singled to shallow center (USA, 2-0)
•    Zoey Defoor drew a one-out walk for the Panthers in the top of the fifth, but Scapin didn't allow her to advance any further as she ended the inning with a strikeout and a ground out to third
•    In the bottom half of the inning, the Jaguars doubled their lead with two more runs
•    The first run came on a RBI-ground out by Branstetter, scoring Lively who had tripled to left to begin the fame (USA, 3-0)
•    Two batters later Gracie Dees lined a double just out of reach of the right fielder, scoring pinch runner Gracie McDonald from second (USA, 4-0)
•    Georgia State threatened to break up the shutout in its half of the sixth as Ciarra Jefferson led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a ground out to second, but Scapin was able to get retire the next two batters with a pop out to short and a fly out to left
•    In the seventh, Scapin sat down the Panthers in order, striking out Lauren Brister and Morgan Willingham, and then getting Defoor to fly out to end the game 

Key Stats
•    Scapin retired Georgia State in order in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings, and didn't face more than four batters in any frame
•    Lively was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base, while Dees was 2-for-3 with a RBI
•    Virginia Mambelli also reached base multiple times as she drew a pair of walks
•    Dunn drove in a pair with her two-run home run

Postgame Notes
•    Lively has reached base safely in 14 of her last 16 games, and had at least one hit in 12 of her last 15
•    Lively extended both her single-season and career triples marks as she recorded the seventh of the season and the 12th of her Jaguar career
•    Lively's triple was the 11th of the season by the Jaguars, moving the club into a tie with the 2015 and 2012 squads for eighth most in a season
•    The multi-hit game for Lively was her team-leading 10th of the spring and the 21st of her career
•    With her base hit in the bottom of the first, Branstetter has had a hit in six of her last nine games, and with her RBI in the in the fifth, she has driven in a run in five of her last eight
•    Dees has had a hit in five of her last six and 17 of her last 26 
•    The double for Dees was her 15th of the season, moving her into second place for a freshman at South and into a tie for fourth-most in a season overall
•    The multi-hit game was the ninth of the season for Dees
•    The home run for Dunn marked the 14th of her collegiate career and her first since Feb. 21 vs. UT Martin
•    It was also Dunn's fourth career home run against Sun Belt Conference competition
•    Mambelli extended her career-best reached base safely streak to 13 with her second-inning walk, as she has now also reached base safely in 19 of her last 20
•    With her two walks, Mambelli has reached base safely multiple times in a game either by hits, walks, or hit by pitch, 17 times this spring
•    McDonald has scored 15 runs off the bench this spring
•    South Alabama has homered in three of its last four games, and in eight of the Jaguars' 14 Sun Belt Conference games
•    Of the Jags' 29 home runs this spring, 11 have come in league play
•    The shutout marked the 11th of the season by Jaguar pitching
•    The complete-game shutout was Scapin's third of the season

•    South Alabama will close out the series with Georgia State on Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
