Jaguars Fall to Bulldogs in Sunday Rubber Match

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama (11-5) dropped the rubber match to Louisiana Tech (10-7) on Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field, by a score of 1-6.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • The Bulldogs scored first with an unearned run in the first frame, before a homer grabbed a two-run lead after two innings.
  • The Jags scored a run in the home half of the third inning on a Marc Stephens sacrifice fly and RBI and plated Ethan Melton, who led off the inning with a double down the left field line.
  • Louisiana Tech extended their lead in the fourth on a Jaguar defensive miscue and unearned run after a sacrifice fly plated one in the third inning.
  • Jaxon Shineflew entered out of the bullpen and characteristically did not allow an earned run in four innings of work. Zero's for both sides offensively would remain true until the Bulldog half of the eighth when a walk scored one more, and a solo shot in the ninth made it 6-1 Bulldogs.

KEY STATS
  • The Jaguars scored once on five hits in the setback. The six Bulldog runs came on four earned, two unearned.
  • Nathan Wood started at first base for the first time this season and grabbed two hits in the setback. Outfielders Rett Johnson and Ethan Melton each had a hit of their own.
  • Daniel Gonzalez (L, 1-1) took the loss, while Bulldog starter Brooks Roberson (W, 3-1) credited the win.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"We allowed four runs on Sunday which should be good enough to win, but we got out competed today. They were hungrier for a win than we were and that's what I told our guys. This won't be the last game we lose, but it better be the last game we get out competed."

ON DECK
The Jags are slated with Southeastern Louisiana for the second time in the early going in a Wednesday night midweek match-up at Stanky Field, March 11 at 6:30 p.m.
