Jaguars Top Lions in Midweek Match-Up, 10-3

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama (12-5) completed the sweep of Southeastern Louisiana (9-8, 2-1 Southland) after taking the Wednesday night match-up by a final score of 10-3 at Stanky Field, after previously leaving victorious in a 9-7 victory in Hammond, La. on Feb. 24.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • The first frame saw a crooked number by both squads when the Lions got started with an RBI single. The Jaguars responded in five-spot fashion highlighted by a Blake Guerin two-RBI double with the bases loaded, and a Paxton Bigby infield single for an RBI.
  • Jaguar starter Hayden O'Dell would allow one more run in the third inning when a second RBI single plated one.
  • Two hits from infielders Marc Stephens and Stewart Puckett set up Mike Young's triple that split the right center field gap to plate two runs, when the Jaguars put up three runs in the fifth inning.
  • The home half of the sixth started with Ethan Melton reaching first on a hit by pitch, then was on the move when Brennon Wright moved him to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run, before catcher Duncan Mathews laid down a safety squeeze to bring home Melton.
  • Freshman Charlie Cassingham pinch hit in the eighth and grabbed his first his career knock when it banged off the left center field wall for a double and an RBI.
  • Max Miller delivered 2.1 innings of one run ball (unearned) and credited the win being the first out of the bullpen. Zach Stevens, Andrew Floyd, and Brian Garmon each tossed an innings scoreless in relief.

KEY STATS
  • Hits up and down the Jaguar lineup shaped the Wednesday evening victory. 10 runs on eight hits with nine team RBI from eight different hitters.
  • Blake Guerin's two-RBI double in the first inning pushed his hitting streak to seven games.
  • Mike Young's RBI triple was the fourth triple of the Jaguar season.
  • Max Miller (W, 1-1) earned the win in 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, while SLU starter Nik Toups (L, 0-1) took the loss.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"We had eight different guys with RBIs after we jumped in the first and again in the fifth with that big three run triple from Mike (Young). Good to see our guys respond with a win. I thought (Max) Miller was the key coming in in the jam in the fourth and facing their strongest guy in the lineup and punched him out. I thought that was the turning point in the game."
