MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama (17-9, 4-3 SBC) started hot offensively to power the series opener victory over Old Dominion (12-13, 2-5 SBC) on a warm Friday night at Stanky Field by a 10-3 final score.
PRIMARY THREADS
- The Jaguars struck for three runs in the second inning all with two outs. The scoring started with a single up the middle from Rett Johnson, plating Paxton Bigby who doubled off of the left field wall. Ethan Melton singled in the next at-bat to put Johnson in scoring position, when leadoff man Brennon Wright smoked a single the opposite way for an RBI.
- The offense followed up the second inning three-spot with four runs in the home half of the third inning on five hits, which included Stewart Puckett's triple to lead off the inning before Blake Guerin doubled him home. The bases were loaded for Brennon Wright who worked the count full with two outs. With the runners moving on the pitch, Wright beat out the ground ball hit to first base scoring Guerin and Paxton Bigby from second base. The Jags would cross once more in the frame with a Duncan Mathews RBI single that plated Mike Young.
- The Monarchs got on the board in the fifth inning when three runs scored on four hits, and would be the only runs allowed by Jaguar Friday night arm in Mitchell Heer.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"Really good pitching and defense from us tonight. 14 strikeouts, two walks, and no errors. Four different guys with seven combined at the top of the order between Brennon and Duncan.
They throw a lot of offspeed. We weren't going to get caught in between, with them trying to slow you down on those pitches and speeding you up with getting a fastball by. We did a good job staying neutral and reacting to what we saw. The coaches did a great job getting them ready to go and the guys executed a plan."
ON DECK
The series continues tomorrow, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
Ryland Bozenhard (0-1, 5.32 ERA) is scheduled to toe the rubber for South while right-hander JJ Gatti (0-3, 5.96 ERA) is the probable for the Monarchs.
