Jaguars Take Series Opener 5-4 vs. ULM in Walk-Off Fashion

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama (15-7, 2-2 SBC) secured the Friday night series opener over ULM (13-10, 3-1 SBC) in a 5-4 walk-off winner by way of a Paxton Bigby RBI single with bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the ninth at Stanky Field.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • First baseman Blake Guerin launched his team-leading sixth homer of the season to left field in three-run fashion in the first inning to get the Jags on the board early.
  • The ULM offense would strike in the third frame when an RBI ground out and an RBI single plated a pair, before Jaguar third baseman Stewart Puckett responded in the bottom half of the inning with a solo shot to right field, tagging his third of the year.
  • A Warhawk solo shot brought them within a run before an RBI single tied the game in the seventh.
  • The bottom of the ninth saw the Jaguar top of the order due up and started with a Brennon Wright bunt single, followed by a walk drawn from Duncan Mathews. A wild pitch advanced the runners before Marc Stephens was intentionally walked. Two strikeouts later, Paxton Bigby stepped in and found real estate down the right field line to win it with the bases loaded and two outs for the Jaguars, 5-4.

KEY STATS
  • Blake Guerin hit his team-leading sixth homer and collected his 23rd RBI of the season.

  • Stewart Puckett record his third homer of the season.
  • Brennon Wright had a three hit night of his own and scored the winning run.
  • Mitchell Heer went 6.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, and 3 K in a no decision.
  • Jaxon Shineflew (W, 3-0) earned the win in 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, and 6 K. The earned run broke his scoreless streak of 19.1 consecutive innings this season, and is the first earned run he's allowed since opening day (Feb. 13).

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"Monroe is different. They've done a great job over there. They got guys that can go deep and they're hard to strike out. I thought Mitch and Shine did a really nice job today. Mitch had to work, had good velo early, but he settled in and they got a little more comfortable the next time through. Mitch hung in there and Shineflew was fantastic.

Bigby with a few hits and then the game winner at the end is good to say because Paxton has really struggled the last couple weeks. He got off to such a good start but the last couple weeks hasn't been where he was early on, but he's kept a level head and kept showing up and working."

ON DECK
The series continues tomorrow, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Ryland Bozenhard (0-0, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to toe the rubber for South while left-hander Brandt Corely (1-1, 7.06 ERA) is the probable for the Warhawks.
