South Alabama Falls in Saturday Contest to ULM, 9-6

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama (15-8, 2-3 SBC) dropped the Saturday contest to ULM (14-10, 3-1 SBC) by a final score of 9-6 at Stanky Field.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • The Warhawk bats outlasted the Jaguars on Saturday and started in the first two frames, when it plated a run in both half innings to get started.
  • ULM plated another in the fourth frame before the Jaguars got on the board in the bottom half by way of a Marc Stephens RBI single down the right field line to plate Duncan Mathews who drew a walk to find his way aboard.
  • The Warhawks plated a pair in the fifth on three hits before the Jaguars got one back on a Duncan Mathews RBI single to make it 5-2 ULM after five.
  • A potential explosive inning formed for the Jaguars in the bottom of the sixth when it loaded the bases with nobody out, but would manage to cross two runs on a Ethan Melton two out walk, followed by Brennon Wright reaching with an RBI on a hit by pitch.
  • Three Warhawk runs scored in the top of the seventh in the back and forth effort, and Blake Guerin hit the longest homer of the year in the bottom half that sailed 443 feet that nailed the top of the light tower in left field, way over the scoreboard for a solo shot and his team-leading seventh of the year.
  • Paxton Bigby followed suit with a backside bomb in the eighth to make the difference a 9-6 Warhawk lead, which would be the final.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"They played better than us today. Pitched better, played better defense, and hit better. We just got outplayed and committed four errors and you can't win many games playing that way.

The good thing is, we have a third of the series left tomorrow. They are a good team and their record is what it is, and their batting average is what it is for a reason. They were tougher than us when it mattered and won the game today. We need to rebound tomorrow."

ON DECK
The rubber game is set for Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Daniel Gonzalez (1-2, 3.00 ERA) will face his former club, while left-hander JC Dermody (4-0, 4.39 ERA) is the probable for the Warhawks.
