19 Event Wins Highlight Strong Season Opener for South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – 19 event wins and several new personal bests highlighted a strong outdoor season opener at Jaguar Track in the USA Invitational for the South Alabama Track & Field program.

On the track, Brody Hamilton set the tone early with a win in the men's 100 meters, crossing the line in 10.53 to tie the ninth fastest time in program history in the event. Marlon Miller followed with a victory in the men's 400 meters in 48.69.

 In the hurdles, Omari Taylor secured the title in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.52, while Kayden Engel added another win for the Jaguars in the women's 400-meter hurdles, clocking 1:03.85. 

South Alabama also picked up two relay victories, as the men's 4x100 relay team of Kelvin Jones, Will Fredrick, Alex Johnson, and Hamilton took first in 40.88, tying the 10th fastest time in program history, while the men's 4x400 relay squad of Garnes, Avery Childress, Johnson, and Miller closed the day with a win in 3:17.42.

The Jaguars were equally dominant in the field events, led by a standout performance from Reuben Booysen, who claimed two titles with wins in the men's hammer throw (59.30m) and the men's javelin (68.97m).

Samuel Mika captured the men's discus with a mark of 49.09m, while Logan Nienaber led a Jaguar one-two finish in the women's discus at 45.69m. 

Iyana Johnson delivered a strong day as well, winning the women's hammer throw (59.32m) before adding another victory in the women's triple jump (12.09m). Dawson Wright claimed the women's shot put win with a throw of 14.25m.

In the jumps and vertical events, Jonathan Henderson cleared 2.15m to win the men's high jump and place second all-time in the event, while Engel added a second victory with a winning mark of 1.71m in the women's high jump. Terek Logan continued his strong season with a personal-best clearance of 5.30m to win the men's pole vault, and Diana Goodman matched that success on the women's side with a winning clearance of 3.65m. 

South Alabama also found success in the horizontal jumps as Diego Dougan captured the men's triple jump with a leap of 14.69m, helping the Jaguars cap a day that saw them collect victories across nearly every event group.

South Alabama Track & Field will travel to LSU to compete in the LSU Opener on Saturday, March 21.
