Jaguars Win Friday Night Thriller Over Ragin’ Cajuns in SBC Opener

LAFAYETTE, La. - South Alabama (13-5, 1-0 SBC) secured the Friday night series opener over Louisiana (13-6, 0-1 SBC) in a 3-2 final score thriller in Lafayette, La. Outfielder Mike Young tagged three hits including the go-ahead homer in the eighth to lead the offense to the victory.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • The Jaguars struck first in the series opener by way of Mike Young's triple in the second inning and scored on a throwing error on the play. Young has triples in back-to-back games.
  • With a nagging ankle injury coming into the game, Mitchell Heer was entirely unfazed when he delivered a masterclass of an outing in 6.1 innings pitched, getting out of some big spots around Jaguar defensive miscues and Louisiana offensive pressure.
  • The Cajuns tied the game in the fourth inning, when their first run of the contest came on an RBI fielder's choice.
  • Mike Young was the story for the Jaguar offense, when he singled home Brennon Wright in the sixth, and homered to grab a one-run lead in the eighth after Louisiana stole home in the bottom of the seventh, to make the game 3-2 Jags, final.
  • Jaxon Shineflew entered in the seventh inning in relief and characteristically shut the door on the Cajun offense in 2.2 innings of scoreless ball. Shineflew picked off Louisiana shortstop Blaze Rodriguez to end the game in the ninth.

KEY STATS
  • Mike Young finished a double from the cycle when he recorded a triple, single, and go-ahead homer in the eighth to record three hits in four at-bats alongside two RBI.
  • Mitchell Heer went 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, and 5 K in a no decision.
  • Jaxon Shineflew (W, 2-0) earned the win in 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, and 4 K, and pushed his scoreless streak to 16.2 innings.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"Mitchell Heer was nasty. Just bulldogged his way through, got us into the seventh, got us deep, did a hell of a job tonight, and couldn't be more proud of him. Shineflew was fantastic as well.

These guys are going to bunt, run, and the innings not over until it's over. You have to keep playing and you have got to handle your baseball. With that said, give these guys credit the way they calmed down. Mitch had a lot to do with that.

I can tell you they've got really good arms. You can see their numbers. They beat LSU, they beat Kansas State. Two of three from DBU. They're a good club, but so are we."

ON DECK
The series continues tomorrow, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Ryland Bozenhard (0-0, 4.38 ERA) is scheduled to toe the rubber for South while week three SBC Pitcher of the Week Andrew Hermann (2-0. 2.84 ERA) is the probable for the Ragin' Cajuns.
